That's what happens when you build police stations in bad neighborhoods.
On one hand, if the officer was on guard duty, why did knife-boy manage to get the drop on him? On the other hand, the officer never has the initiative. It's easy to walk up to someone, strike up a conversation, and then pull a knife. Easier than drawing a pistol, actually.
This is why I'll never be a patrol officer. Philosophically, I'm just not equipped for it.
