Anyone here know aught about the area of Sherman Street in Jersey City? Or the area between Barrow and Wayne street? Any jokes combining Alaska and Batman will result in a summary thumping, I'm already dealing with the persistent sneaking suspicion that Bludhaven is actually Jersey City or Hoboken in disguise...

I was under the impression that Gotham City was supposed to be patterned off of Chicago, which would make Bludhaven (assuming that the DC folks put this much though into it) ... Gary or Milwaukee? Maybe Detroit?

Yeah. Metropolis OTOH was originally patterned after Cleveland IIRC, but is now more like New York.

The main thing that distinguishes NYC and Gotham City, however, is that in NYC there is no significant industry making giant props (http://www.supermanartists.comics.org/batman/giantpenny-wf30.jpg).

I was under the impression until very recently that Gotham was DC's New York, and Metropolis was DC's Chicago (formerly known as The Metropolis of the West, at least in chamber of commerce poster ad-copy).

Then I found out that DC *has* a New York, separate from Gotham, and that Metropolis is, for some cracktastic reason, not in the midwest. So now I'm lost.

Camwyn's probably right, but, in my recollection, Gotham doesn't have a seaport (it has a port, but Metropolis has actually been stated as having a port on the Atlantic as well as barrier islands like the ones out in the Grand Banks). My guess is that where they started is pretty much irrelevant; both Gotham and Metropolis are pseudo-NYCs.

I used to live on Montgomery near both Wayne and Barrow.
