Tharks are green. There is no green race in Oz, but there is a green country in the center. The Tharks could pretty easily be shifted onto the Emerald City if need be- except that in the first books the Emerald City was secretly white. It might therefore be more acceptable to make the Emerald City equate to Dor; after all, didn't everyone want to go there but no one really know who was at its centre?

Of course, this makes it rather difficult to justify Dorothy being sent back. No one returns from Dor, after all. Hmm. . . perhaps we can pull some sort of a switch. "Bring me the metal of the Goddess Issus!" Which would only work with Dorothy 'cos she doesn't know just how powerful an enemy she's going to be facing. I think I could see that.

Dorothy to be mistaken for a thern, of course. White dress, white skin, blond hair.

The Quadlings of Glinda's country are not a problem at all. Whatsername- Dejah Thoris- instead of Glinda.

The Winkies are also not a problem. Yellow Men with black beards? Instant Winkie. True, they live in the far north and are almost never heard of until book 3, but eh. Oz needs to dominate somewhere.

The Munchkins are a bit of a problem, dressing in blue as they do. The Gillikuns also don't map out. Map the Gillikuns to the First Born and change the Munchkins for the Tharks.

The Scarecrow's going to be a bit difficult to match. The Tin Man was originally a Munchkin, which makes my life a lot easier, because he becomes Tars Tarkas the Tin Thark. The Tin Woodsman got hacked up as the result of a curse placed on him for falling in love with a girl, after all. Tars Tarkas + Gozava OMGtheirloveissounTharklike.

Cowardly Lion = Woola, who is capable of rather clearer telepathy than in the John Carter books. (Dorothy Carter?)

. . . wait, no, that's the ticket, the Scarecrow can be Kantos Kan, who was John Carter's good buddy and an officer in the navy of Helium.

No Flying Monkeys. There isn't really anything that maps to the… no, never mind, forgot. The Monkeys are the servants of the Wicked Witch, albeit unwillingly. (So are the Winkies, but we can ignore that for the moment.) They're being controlled by the Golden Cap, right? Okay, so, the Golden Cap = yellow wig + thern diadem. The Flying Monkeys map out to the black pirates of Barsoom, which means the monkeys are the same thing as the Gillikuns, but I think we can probably arrange something on that front. . . no. No, as scary as the pirates/First Born are, the flying monkeys are just going to have to be replaced with the White Apes of Mars.

Thuvia = Ozma?

Oh, well, hadn't done anything to get me sent to Hell in a month or two anyway.

Y'know, not only am I processing this through the original sources, but also through "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" (comic; of the film we do not speak) and Phil Foglio's "Xxxenophile" spoof of the John Carter-esque Mars civilisations. That leads to a very strange bend in the brain indeed.

Pretty brilliant, though...

I dunno, I kind of like it. It's a more interesting place than mine has been, of late.

Save some nachos in Hell for me, won't y'all?

I don't suppose the other Oz books are online anywhere? The ones by Ruth Plumly Thompson et al?

Not old enough to be automatically out of copyright, I'm afraid (the rule-of-thumb cutoff for US works is pre-1923).

Oh yes, and most if not all of the Mars books can be found online.

mine's a combined volume of chessmen and thuvia. i only have the first oz book, but i've read two others. they're on my list. you know, the one of all the books i've decided that i'm "supposed" to read. i should be committed.

the heinlein one had some good bits, but really didn't make me happy overall. i only mention it because his fictional folx visit both barsoom and oz.

I'll take your word that this is a sign of being sick. It's just nonsensical to me since I hardly know more of the Wizard of Oz than the movie, and I can't even identify your other source. :)
