I had a message from Hellblazer: Hogwarts fan today. They liked the work so far, they wanted to see more, they hoped I hadn't abandoned it (which I haven't- I work on it at night on the train home from work), and they wanted to see more of John interacting with Snape.

Possibly with slash.

My skin kind of crawled at the thought. Not of slash, nor of slash with John in (he's canonically bi and if you don't believe me you need to go pick up a copy of the Ashes and Dust in the City of Angels story arc right now), but... well. I have a lot of trouble considering Snape sexy. Personality-wise, he's nasty, although if one were smart enough a passable conversation could be kept up. Physically he resembles too many of the guys I went to school with.

Snape just... no, nope, sorry. Fascinating, but not attractive. I'll stick with John for my USRDA of magnificent bastards, thanks.

Besides, isn't John muggle-born, from a Harry Potter perspective? I can't imagine Snape letting a Muggle get him between the sheets.

On reflection, I can see him flirting with Snape if he found out that it bugged Snape. Just to, you know, be a magnificent bastard and all.
After classes, the door to the faculty lounge suddenly flew open, and in strode Snape in high dudgeon. "MIS-ter CONstantine. I wanted to ask if you could perhaps Stop interrupting my class?"
John sighed, and said "I'm sorry, Sevvy. Oi jes' can't resist the mystery those flowing robes you wear calls to my mind. I lay awake at night, imagining what's beneath them..."
Snape stomped out of the teacher's lounge.
Professor McGonagall looked down her nose at Professor Constantine, and said archly "One of these days, Mr. Constantine, he'll do something you might regret."
"I'm countin' onnit, Ma'am," John replied with a smirk.

I second John doing it to get a rise out of Snape. Otherwise? Not really. John's had canonical precedent for snogging dudes, but a lot of that slashing seemed to be fairly "do it to fuck with his mind", and everyone knows fucking around with people's heads is John's bread and butter.

So. Only if he does it to give Snape an aneurysm.

I can't believe I'm even posting in friends' LJs today, but that just completely squicks me out. Is nothing sacred? And why would John be attracted to someone like Snape? I see him flirting with Frank before I see him with someone like Snape, and we all know how badly that slash couple would turn out.

Not having a particular interest in slash of any type, I find myself baffled by the whole suggestion. I am curious, though, about how the amount of Snape and/or Malfoy slashfic increased (or decreased, I suppose) after Alan Rickman, Tom Felton, and Jason Isaacs portrayed those characters (Snape, Draco and Lucius, respectively). Was it particularly prevalent before those three very pretty men took the parts, or only after? 'Cause, all the illustrations from the books make Snape kind of vulture-like, Draco very oily, and Lucius very viperish. Not what I would call handsome.

I've never watched the movies and while I've joked about Snape/Trelawney Harry Potter and the Moulin Rouge spoof parodyfic, I get a very asexual vibe off Snape.

I mean. Sirius and Remus act like an old married couple, but Snape just feels plain asexual. Like a potted plant with a nasty disposition.

Depends. I recall one or two of the fanfic writers I used to follow (not actively looking for HP fanfic ATM) mention that they had imagined Snape with Rickman's voice before the movies were released. And I think many folks became Snape fans after Goblet of Fire. (I know I did, but I haven't written HP fanfic. Yet.) The movies probably did help boost up the number of fans though, which would have an effect on how many would write fanfic centered on him.

Can't really say anything about Draco or Lucius since I don't pay attention to them.

Rickman has long been considered sexylicous by a large amount of females.

Can I steal your Constantine icon? It is the best pic of John ever. (He appears in good stories, but the art is usually blargariffic)

Well, let me run this by you. I had read the first four books before I saw the first movie, and I had no idea of the difference between Alan Rickman and Adam's off ox. But, I suspected after the scene in the first book where they think he's attacking Harry and it turns out he's defending him that Snape is eventually going turn out to be one of those 'tortured misunderstood anti-hero' types. That scene seemed to me to be a purposeful foreshadowing. Eventually he'll provide crucial help that Harry won't be expecting. Mainly, I think Rowling's a romantic, and she likes that type.

[livejournal.com profile] eor (who's not likely to be swayed by Alan Rickman, not being interested in males), has pointed out to me that he thinks it quite likely that Snape is more acting in the interest of the kids safety than Dumbledore does. He suspects Snape doesn't want to see kids used in the front lines of the coming war, and that the only way he can rebel against the way Dumbledore is getting them prepared to do just that is to avoid teaching them the advanced skills D. wants them taught.

I suspect we'll also find out that Snape is not near as much of an asshole as he appears to the kids, and that giving some of them bad grades they don't deserve is not due to randomly disliking them.

However, I have the same reaction to his physical description as you do. In my case he reminds me too much of my ex-boyfriend, who was controlling and emotionally abusive.

Snape my not be likeable but I tend to think well of him if for no other reason than his role as an agent within the armies of evil, that's the work of a very brave and dedicated individual.
Be interesting to see if JKR reveals any more of his backstory vis a vis the Potter family.
Slash? No... Snape should either be ascetically asexual (in a Holmesian stylee) or do something utterly surprising like proposing to Tonks.

Snape and Tonls? Now THAT is the one that makes me shout at its wrongness... I mean, she's the fun-loving, outgoing one, but a bit clumsy - I can't even imagine Snape tolerating her presence voluntarily, let alone harboring a secret and abiding luuuuurve.

Gweh. I'm glad I didn't eat breakfast yet.

Love's a funny old thing and I suggested Snape-Tonks merely as an extreme example of the point I was trying to make e.g. That Snape IMHO should either live the bachelor life (ala Sherlock) or suddenly and without warning fall utterly for someone that no-one in their right mind would expect. Snape's more damaged than nasty really.

Why I keep thinking of Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn movies when this comes to mind I do not know... :-)

Oh good lord, no. I mean, I like Snape, and I like Constantine, but they're going to try to kill each other eventually.

John is entirely too much of the Trickster for Snape to ever warm to him. He's almost designed to be the sort of person who pisses Snape off. And while John loves to play the devil, he's rather too clever to make a true enemy out of Snape without a dire reason for it; John has too many enemies to start with, and he knows that allies -- especially ones like Dumbledore -- are fickle.

You mean it`s not pre-slash?
>_<
OK...just kidding. It`s one of the very, very few gen fics I`ve ever read&loved. But it is terribly, um, pre-slashy.
