I called the Red Cross chapter I used to work for and made my donation this morning as soon as I got to the office and confirmed that I'd been paid. Like I said: already done so myself. Will do so again six months from now, when the attention's died down but the needs are still there.

We used mobile phones to donate to the Red Cross Catastrophe Fund for Southeast Asia. So far I've donated 40 euros (over 50 dollars) by phone, and dumped all my change twice into collection containers waved by volunteers collecting at malls and grocery stores on 31 Dec. I've also, as you know, submitted my cv as an information/communications officer to the Red Cross and said I'm prepared to volunteer to do whatever they think I'd be useful doing. I don't know what else I can do, but I feel better having done this. I think the man I love most in the world is already out there with the Red Cross relief crews, but he's incommunicado so I don't know for sure. The whole of Scandinavia has risen up to do what they can, in shock still, but right there, helping.

Thank you. I'm sure the Red Cross appreciates everything you've done so far- and from what i"ve seen, Scandinavia's been setting a pretty damn impressive example. I called my local chapter and told them I wanted to donate to the International Relief Fund, figuring that it might wind up having to go to Somalia (also affected, good God), and knowing that National HQ probably gave every chapter an international fundraising goal to meet. Donated to the chapter itself, too, since during big disasters they often find that money that would've paid for local fire or flood operations gets sent to the faraway disaster instead.

We in Finland have a special Red Cross 'Catastrophe' Fund, and an 'International Relief' fund, completely separate from the local funds. These 'International' funds are kept in Switzerland. In four days, Finland has raised six million euros (c. 8 million dollars) in a population of 5 million people, for International Relief. I'm really proud of my people.

I remember you had a rant some time ago about the whole Red Cross / Red Star of David thingy. Could you either reiterate the salient points or provide a link to the already-written rant?
