OK, I've never read Eyrie OR David Drake, but everybody else. And, well, that 'last dude', Elias Lönnrot, or Lonrott, he's best known as the collector and editor of the Finnish National Epic, The Kalevala. Does THAT ring any bells? I can't change camwyn's list, 'cause I've got 'em all. Along with about 300 others...comes with the territory...(university prof)...

I used to have two copies of the Kalevala- different translations- but after one too many attempts to describe Ilmarinen and Leminkainen to a friend of mine, I wound up giving him one of the copies. Ah, well.

Glad the packet arrived safely, you never know with international post. Which translations of Kalevala did you have? Which did you like best? I liked Patrick Macgoohan (can't remember the spelling of his name) except I didn't like 'Soppy Hat' as a name. My Skildbo (Swedish term for separated SO) was named for Ilmarinen - it's quite a common Finnish name for men.
The icon you used looks just like Finland, except the road appears to be paved, and most forest roads in Finland aren't paved. You've given me a good idea to make an icon out of a piece of local scenery - hadn't thought of that one, thanks.

I don't know who did my first translation; I can remember the cover (blue, with one of the knotted-square designs with looped corners), but not the translator. The other one I have here is translated by Keith Bosley, and is the Oxford University Press World's CLassics edition. I'm not really all that surprised about Ilmarinen being a common Finnish name, considering that when I named one of my FurryMUCK characters 'Kyllikki' I got addressed in Finnish by something like four different people before someone finally told me it was the Prime Minister of the time's wife's name... I wound up getting one of them to teach me the sentence 'olen pahoillani (or is it pahoillanen?), mutta olen amerikkalainen' for future would-be Suomi conversationalists.

As for the icon, that's a section of Gold Hill Road outside Fairbanks, Alaska. The paving is a bit questionable and involves more pebbles than actual asphalt, or at least it felt that way when I was attempting to ride a not-very-well-maintained bicycle over it. I was on my way to buy a skein of qiviut from the only wool shop in town; it was the first week of September, the beginning of Alaska's three-week-long autumn season. Slightly rainy, and about 7 degrees C out.

Bulgakov - I have everything he's ever written that was published, in both Russian and English. I HIGHLY recommend The Master and Margarita.

Neal Stephenson - I have, in order of publication, everything he has written that is published. Read Snow Crash *before* you read Diamond Age, as that is crucial. I've read Quicksilver and Confusion, the first two parts of the Baroque Cycle, as well as Cryptonomicon. ANYTHING by Stephenson is excellent.

Landolfi - Words in Commotion, Cancer Queen, etc., in English.
