Got a new celphone. This one has polyphonic downloadable ringtones AND a camera. Yay camera. I specify this because Macy's had a neat shirt for sale today; I liked the look of it, but it's covered in old-style Chinese script, looking rather like the stuff you see on chops, and I have a standing policy of not wearing any writing I can't read. Anyone care to get sent an impromptu cameraphone shot of this shirt in an effort to discern whether it says 'on the thirtieth day of this month, Tax Assessor Wei received four chickens', or is complete nonsense, or what?

Oh- and I've set the default ringtone to the MacGyver theme music. Yay me!

He's not a fully canonized saint- another miracle has to be credited to him first- but one Blessed James Duckett probably qualifies. Martyred in 1602 during the height of the Protestant twitchiness that periodically swept through Elizabethan England, Duckett was a printer and a distributor of forbidden books on Catholicism. He was ultimately nailed by the English government for printing and distributing these texts and hanged for it; as a disseminator of information he's probably the best candidate, since we haven't had many saints come out of the tech fields yet. Certainly he's probably going to qualify as patron of pirate radio and underground DJs, given a history like that.

Well, the image came through just fine. Sorry about the email address, when I try to write you at megalocerous it bounces. Any road, I'll ask my students tomorrow, but at first glance it looks remarkably like the calligraphy my Laoshi (master) gave me as a farewell gift: all the signs are variants on the 'longevity' symbol. You notice that they repeat, and that the reiteration is of only about ten or twelve symbols. Will get back to you. Interesting.

I noticed a lot of repetition but I hadn't actually tried to decipher the shirt. Mostly I just wanted to get a reasonably readable picture so that someone with better translating skills could have a go at it; I only took about ten classes in Chinese, and our laoshi was more concerned with getting our pronunciation right.
