camwynCan anyone here help me write a very, very polite letter saying 'I love you all and I've loved working with you these past four years, but I'm afraid I've been looking for another job these past few months and I seem to have acquired one'? My interviews of the past few days appear to have paid off; I'll be working in Manhattan pretty soon for a financial company run by a friend of my uncle's, as their systems administrator. It's a high pressure place but they're nice people and the firm is quite small, and they pay more than twice what I'm getting now...
No, I did not bargain! It's been six years since I worked in the for-profit sector. I have no knowledge of what to bargain for! That plus equity plus health insurance plus stock options were what was offered and I said yes and that was pretty much that. Aiya...
I have GOT to write a proper letter and give my two weeks' notice. That's a fair amount of time, isn't it?

Date: 2004-10-05 10:04 am (UTC)I'm alarmingly good at the polite and mealymouthed resignation letter -- or so I found out when I left my old job in Houston, six years ago. The key is to keep it short and formal. Also, another thing that I find helpful is to write out the heartfelt letter (wibblingly teary-eyed if the place was good, and vitriolic if it was bad), read said letter, fold it up, and either burn it or file it in the Look Back and Laugh folder. Then sit down to write the real letter, which goes something like: Like I said, polite, a bit mealymouthed, painfully formal, but to the point and not putting anyone in too heinously uncomfortable a position. (At least, I hope not.)

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the experience I gained while working as (whatever it was you were). I am glad I had the opportunity to work for an organization as worthwile as this one, but after much deliberation, I have made the decision that it is time for me to move forward in my career. Therefore it is with regret that I must now turn in my two weeks notice.
