Can anyone here help me write a very, very polite letter saying 'I love you all and I've loved working with you these past four years, but I'm afraid I've been looking for another job these past few months and I seem to have acquired one'? My interviews of the past few days appear to have paid off; I'll be working in Manhattan pretty soon for a financial company run by a friend of my uncle's, as their systems administrator. It's a high pressure place but they're nice people and the firm is quite small, and they pay more than twice what I'm getting now...

No, I did not bargain! It's been six years since I worked in the for-profit sector. I have no knowledge of what to bargain for! That plus equity plus health insurance plus stock options were what was offered and I said yes and that was pretty much that. Aiya...

I have GOT to write a proper letter and give my two weeks' notice. That's a fair amount of time, isn't it?

Hee, I remember that place. It's all kitsch, but it's fun kitsch. Congrats on the job!

In the job you can talk about how rewarding it's been and then go on to say something about "personal development" or whatnot.

I wish i could help, but I'm horrible at writing resignation letters. >_<

Two weeks notice does not exist in my part of the world. You have to stay on for a month after handing in your resignation letter if you're a regular employee.

Mazel tov!

But why do you need to write a letter? It's accepted practice to tell your supervisor directly; you can do a followup letter if they need it.

Dear $BOSS,

I've been happy working here, but I've just received an offer that I've decided to take. My last day here will be $LASTDAY.

Love and kisses,

[livejournal.com profile] camwyn

Hrmm...maybe not the love and kisses part...

keep it short

something like,

Managers,

I regret to inform you that this notice will be my two weeks notice with the company. I feel that I've grown considerably while I was here with the skills of my field. However, with that growth also comes the need to move on, and I have found an opportunity to increase my skills even more. I hope that you all know that I couldn't have done this without your assistance, and I am grateful for the 4 wonderful years that I've had here.

Thank you,

alter to fit your situation or make it more specific as needed. ;)

Two weeks' notice is pretty much standard.

I'm alarmingly good at the polite and mealymouthed resignation letter -- or so I found out when I left my old job in Houston, six years ago. The key is to keep it short and formal. Also, another thing that I find helpful is to write out the heartfelt letter (wibblingly teary-eyed if the place was good, and vitriolic if it was bad), read said letter, fold it up, and either burn it or file it in the Look Back and Laugh folder. Then sit down to write the real letter, which goes something like:
Dear [Boss]:

I wish to give notice of my resignation, effective [date], two weeks from [date of letter].

I have very much enjoyed my time at [place of employ] and have gained a great deal from working with you and my coworkers. Thank you very much for the opportunities you've given me.

Sincerely,
[Name]
Like I said, polite, a bit mealymouthed, painfully formal, but to the point and not putting anyone in too heinously uncomfortable a position. (At least, I hope not.)

Good luck and congratulations on the new job!

Here. Poke me tomorrow when I drop on for the obligatory online before the OT calls and I'll help. I'm good at writing those sorts of letters; I must have been a torturer in a past life.

MAZEL TOV! YAY! CONGRATS! Now if only I could send you soup as celebration...

Congratulations on the job!

I'd offer letter suggestions, but I don't think I can beat what's already been offered.

Congrats on the new job. And no help with the letter. The only I've ever written is memo format going along the lines of "As you know, my last day is [fill in the blanks]" and that's about it, because I've only ever worked summer jobs.

Good on ya! Does this mean you'll be moving out of the great state of New Jersey, or are you going to commute?

You've probably done the letter by this point, but here's my 2 cents anyway:

Dear Boss:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the experience I gained while working as (whatever it was you were). I am glad I had the opportunity to work for an organization as worthwile as this one, but after much deliberation, I have made the decision that it is time for me to move forward in my career. Therefore it is with regret that I must now turn in my two weeks notice.

I will always value the time I spent working at the Red Cross. Thank you,
Camwyn. (well, use your real name)

Congratulations again!
