Eee! Fan mail!
Aug. 31st, 2004 03:49 pmI just got an email from a Canadian reader who visited my web site and seems to have liked the How To Pass For Canadian link. And another email came in a few days ago from a gentleman who'd run across Diary of a Mountie and was incredibly happy that he'd found good Wizard of Oz fanfic that adults and children could enjoy. The Canadian reader has asked me to include the Tragically Hip on the list of 'bands that will give you Canadian cred if you say you like them', and the Diary reader wants to know if there's going to be a sequel...
I'm just squeeing. Don't mind me. I'll be working on Hellblazer: Hogwarts over the next few days. Squeeing helps.

Date: 2004-08-31 06:29 pm (UTC)Personal opinion, mind you.
Date: 2004-08-31 06:51 pm (UTC)I love the Hip. (And I'm not Canadian. I just pass for one every two weeks.)
By the way . . .
Date: 2004-08-31 06:53 pm (UTC)Isn't Ridcully kind of breaking his own rule by virtue of his being addicted to Wow-Wow Sauce?
Or perhaps this comes in a book I don't have, and he is, indeed, describing why he's giving up Wow-Wow Sauce or something like that?

I sent you (camwyn) email. Next time, it will be my essential 54*40, followed by essential Canadian classic rock (in which the Guess Who features prominently!)
Of course the guess who ...
Date: 2004-09-01 05:58 am (UTC)During the olympics when the american women's teams were playing beach volleyball, they kept playing it when they scored. And I kept chuckling to myself because it always seems to me that they've never actually listened to the lyrics ... *G*
Re: Of course the guess who ...
Date: 2004-09-01 06:10 am (UTC)Oh, I find it funny myself, but then again I listen to the words on just about anything. Ever since I heard about a Republican national convention sometime in the early 1990's where they played Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" because they thought it was patriotic. (It's the song of a Vietnam veteran who got shafted by his country.) Between that and the use of another Springsteen song, "Born to Run", by ... I forget who but it was for some big event related to New Jersey state politics. This was not a good idea, given that "Born to Run" is all about the desperate, driving urge to get the hell OUT of New Jersey.
Anyway, you see what I mean. If I'd known they were playing "American Woman" during the Olympic volleyball games I'd have snorted soda out my nose.
Re: Of course the guess who ...
Date: 2004-09-01 06:18 am (UTC)I mean, when Lenny Kravitz did the cover, at least then it was partially intended - Mike Myers being behind it and all. But then they started going mad with how much they played it ... and the lyrics ... yah.
I agree though - it's quite funny what people will use 'catchy' songs for without paying attention to the lyrics. One of my favourites still has to be the cruise line that's using 'lust for life' in their commercials for family cruises.
Wonder why they never play the lines about the liquor and drugs? heh.
