I just got an email from a Canadian reader who visited my web site and seems to have liked the How To Pass For Canadian link. And another email came in a few days ago from a gentleman who'd run across Diary of a Mountie and was incredibly happy that he'd found good Wizard of Oz fanfic that adults and children could enjoy. The Canadian reader has asked me to include the Tragically Hip on the list of 'bands that will give you Canadian cred if you say you like them', and the Diary reader wants to know if there's going to be a sequel...

I'm just squeeing. Don't mind me. I'll be working on Hellblazer: Hogwarts over the next few days. Squeeing helps.

Silly me...I guess I just assumed that the Hip was there.

Same here.

Can't imagine Canada without the Hip.

The Hip = awesome.

And ditto here *L* Guess that proves the point of adding it to the list, when the initial canadian response is 'you mean it wasn't there?' as we're all so prepared to see it we assume it is :)

Personal opinion, mind you.

Phantom Power is a good place to start, as it's the start of their recent phase of nigh-unbeatable songwriting talent - at least, if you want it to be an equal balance between erudite, often abstract lyrics, and rocking, intelligently-crafted melodies - but you really can't go wrong with their newest release, either - In Between Evolution, IIRC.

I love the Hip. (And I'm not Canadian. I just pass for one every two weeks.)

By the way . . .

67. "Never drink any drink with a humourous name. Never drink any drink that changes colour when the last ingredient goes in." - Mustrum Ridcully.

Isn't Ridcully kind of breaking his own rule by virtue of his being addicted to Wow-Wow Sauce?

Or perhaps this comes in a book I don't have, and he is, indeed, describing why he's giving up Wow-Wow Sauce or something like that?

Silly me.

Fan mail is always worth a squee. :)

...and now I'm getting all nostalgic for the LXG game and thinking I should have one more go at finishing Dorothy's letter home.

Gotta start at the beginning, where the rest of us Canadians did. Blow at High Dough, then New Orleans is Sinking.

I love the Hip, and I've been Canadian all my life.

I sent you (camwyn) email. Next time, it will be my essential 54*40, followed by essential Canadian classic rock (in which the Guess Who features prominently!)

Of course the guess who ...

Does anyone else (probably mostly canadians) get great amusement when they use 'American woman' for american purposes?

During the olympics when the american women's teams were playing beach volleyball, they kept playing it when they scored. And I kept chuckling to myself because it always seems to me that they've never actually listened to the lyrics ... *G*

I would have snorted soda out my nose myself, except I've run across it before ... by now it's a roll of the eyes thing.

I mean, when Lenny Kravitz did the cover, at least then it was partially intended - Mike Myers being behind it and all. But then they started going mad with how much they played it ... and the lyrics ... yah.

I agree though - it's quite funny what people will use 'catchy' songs for without paying attention to the lyrics. One of my favourites still has to be the cruise line that's using 'lust for life' in their commercials for family cruises.

Wonder why they never play the lines about the liquor and drugs? heh.

yes, but given we both work in IT in a way or another ... we both know that if they'd kept that line in, they'd have provided truth in advertising (albeit with a slightly ... different meaning ... than the stones initially intended). And they couldn't have that! It would be unprecedented! :)

(as I have seen microsoft products nearly reduce men to tears when they decide to play up at a critical moment *G*)
