I have to restart my Chinese History lecture series. I've been idle on that a year and a half.

It's time I got started on Qin Shihuangdi.

Without all the swishy sleeves and wire fu from those commercials.

(Oh, and I intend to work on Hellblazer: Hogwarts this weekend. It's been a zoo lately but I do owe y'all that.)

Who is that avatar picture of? It doesn't look much like the photos you sometimes use of presumably-you-with-critter, and to my eyes at least it has more than a passing resemblence to Dave VanDomelen, and while I certainly consider him a close net.friend and he has some degree of fame as a Reviewer Of Stuff (mainly toys, and episodes of shows they go with, IIRC), superhero parody fiction writer, and the physics prof everyone loves to take classes with at whichever university it is he works for, he seems somewhat unlikely as a celebrity to be used in other people's avatar pictures.

Okay, long story short: I have a character who started off an RPG character but who's gonna wind up in written fiction when cadhla and I have the opportunity to work on this bigmassivehuge world thingy of hers. Said character is the fellow referred to in Round 1 of Iron Author as having gone off to marry a mermaid (this is listed under 'urban fantasy, starts beside public fountain, and also someone falls out of a tree'.

The picture is supposed to be his brother, although the original photograph I used for reference was of a blonde Caucasian- it was a Donna Karan eyewear ad. I drew it myself.

So, no, not Mr. VanDomelen.

Bear in mind that my sources are, well... I've got Sima Qian here, and I've got a Singaporean copy of Rise and Fall of the Qin Dynasty, and of course Larry Gonick's Cartoon History of the Universe (but that doesn't count as much- he mostly used the Sima Qian material). I cannot guarantee truth. I can only guarantee that I will try not to froth at the mouth too much.

Wait...are the king and the assassin in Hero the same king and assassin from The Emperor and the Assassin?

Same king. Different assassin. Jing Ke is a historical figure who made an attempt on the life of the King of Qin in a manner very similar to that depicted in the movie (the movie took some liberties, but given that the source material they used was being written several hundred years after the fact, that's not a real surprise). I would need to see the transliterated Chinese names of the characters in Hero to say for sure if they were the ones used in the Jing Ke plot- I doubt it.

Same king, though.

To be completely irrelevant, have you seen any of the new "Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy" episodes? I caught one the other day where Nergal Jr. joins Billy and Mandy in school, to the discomfiture of the school bully and the teacher, Miss Butterbean.

As a RL distraction, here in Tennessee we have people who think Orange Alerts somehow refer to the University of Tennessee football team. Such bliss, to enjoy such ignorance, wot?

I dunno. As an archer, my heart leapt for greater joy when I discovered that the ancient world did have a Universally Recognised Scary Noise(tm) equivalent to the sound of a pump-action shotgun being readied, namely: the crrrrrrk of a hojillion VERY STRONG BOWS being drawn and held at full draw.

I remember that noise from Kenneth Branagh's Henry V, along with the KJJSSSSTHHHHHH of all those hojillion and two arrowns flying through the air. Very scary.
