Okay, I don't think this is a good sign.

Normally when I'm mad at the computers here at work I call them Binky. As in the horse of Death in Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, that kind of Binky. The name sounds relatively silly and enforces a certain level of 'I am the human YOU are the technology DO AS I SAY' in my mind, despite its association with the horse. I mean, c'mon. Binky. How can anything (other than the horse) named Binky put up much of a fight?

Last night I did not get enough sleep, due partly to a dream of being yelled at for stopping to get ice cream while on my way to some other obligation, and due partly to going into Aleksei the Scary mode and happily lecturing about Canadian history vs. American history.

Today when I went to yell at one of the computers, I glared at it and called it "Buddy dere" without even thinking about it.

I think I gotta go run through the fifty states in less than five minutes now, just to make sure I haven't forgotten.

ETA: Cleared all fifty states in just under three minutes. Go, me. I shall have to memorise the capitals eventually, too.

Why is calling a computer "buddy dere" a problem?

Because the only people I've ever seen using the phrase were all Canadians making fun of Newfies, and I'd rather not do that.

My previous computer was named "Bink" by my then-housemate. Bink was against the shared wall between our bedrooms, and I'd set all the important-to-me alerts to a small ping (and the rest to silence), so when I had the speakers on - usually for playing a CD while I worked - she heard all the "bink" noises through the wall.

My current machine at home is named Victor, primarily after Dr. Frankenstein, since I built him myself. Also, to some degree, after Herr Baron Doktor Viktor von Doom, but mostly after Dr. Frankenstein.

My SO, mistresscarlett, named her computer "Alana" after the books about the lady knight of tortall by tamora pierce (http://www.tamora-pierce.com/books.htm), as a result the computer fights her continuously!


Speaking of binky, 'scarlett is currently in an australian production of Terry Pratchet's Mort, on stage now. the cast and crew pictures are at the shutter fly link on the page "The Bump in has been mostly bumped (http://www.livejournal.com/users/mistresscarlett/64130.html)".

I built the glowing blue eyes for Death and Mort you can see in the pictures - they're remote switch operated so that Mort can game-face whenever he wants to.
