I'm not a teenager. I'm thirty. But I never tried. Never tried tobacco, either. Grew up in an Italian-American home (and once I had mead at a RenFaire) so I can't say I've never had recreational alcohol, but I thought I'd pass this one on. Think I got it from anaid_rabbit.

Meanwhile I'm working on Who Ya Gonna Owl?. I left the USB key with the main files on it at the office over the weekend, which nearly gave me a heart attack Friday night- I thought I'd lost it in Manhattan somewhere.

I'm going to sound just like a politician, here, but I honestly don't remember. Maybe? I might have inhaled once or twice.;) I remember eating a sprig of pot one time, because the neighbor had every flat surface covered with drying bails. But pot was so commonly in use among my parent's friends that it was sort of just not a big deal at all, so I don't think I ever bothered. It wasn't any kind of conscious choice, really, just one of those things I never got around to. And putting smoke in my lungs always made me cough, so I never took up cigarettes, either.

Being horribly allergic to pot, I've never tried the stuff, don't associate with stoners, and don't associate with people who won't understand if I leave a room as soon as a stoner enters.

I don't smoke nicotine tarsticks, but I don't mind people who do, so long as they don't smoke the extremely foul smelling brands. I actually like the effects of nicotine, but am so chemical sensitive that a little secondhand smoke every once in a long while is plenty for me.

Alcohol doesn't bother me, since it just seems to make people more willing to be who they are, whoever that happens to be. Anyone I associate with while they drink is either happily and controlledly belligerent regardless of alcohol, or non-belligerent regardless of alcohol. My own tastes run to mead, since I am more interested in pleasant taste and mild effect than in being drop dead durnk, but I very rarely drink at all.

..but if you never tried it, or even inhaled because someone else was, how do you know you are horribly allergic?

Because people smoke it in dorm rooms, along sidewalks, at bus stops... Ie. where an unsuspecting passer by can get a sudden (albeit slight) whiff without intending to. That slight breath of it is enough to send me running away choking and gagging, and to give me a terrible headache / make me clumsy and useless for the rest of that day, sometimes even part of the next as well.

Stepping off a public transit bus directly into a thick cloud of pot smoke has to be one of my least favorite experiences ever.

I just really don't consider barely enough to recognize the smell before running like a scared rabbit to be the same as inhaling what other people would consider a significant quantity. That would be like claiming someone had smoked cigarettes because they once sat on the bus next to someone who had been smoking shortly before that.

I was, in many ways, a very staid teenager. If I were to go into a list of 'typical teenage things' I never tried, I'd probably be typing until Thursday. But marijuana, tobacco, alcohol, dating, sneaking out of the house... None of that. I think such teenage rebellion as I had came in the form of rebelling against the stereotypes of rebellion. Probably the worst thing I did was rack up huge long-distance charges calling a BBS in Texas. (I'm such a scoundrel...)

I have no idea what the stat is myself, really. I imagine it's probably a good bit less- I'm reminded of a survey a few years ago that seemed to indicate that one in four teenagers drank $vast_enormous_horrible_amount of booze in wild binges each week, until someone did the math and realised that if the figure were true, teenagers were entirely and solely responsible for the consumption of all alcohol in the country.

never smoked anything in my life. never really felt the need - i can be strange without chemical assistance.

besides, i already have ample evidence that i have a habit of hanging on to bad habits. so why add another to the list on purpose?

Wow...I get to go totally against the grain here!

I was drinking alcoholically and smoking dope as often as possible before I was out of high school. I continued both for the first several years of university then gave up pot for a disapproving boyfriend and concentrated solely on the heavy drinking at every possibility for the next 10 years or so.

Now been sober almost 6 and a half years (in a few days). Been that long since I smoked any pot. Most of the time, when I miss anything, I miss the pot way more.
