A demon, a longstanding enemy of John's. Early in John's career as a supernatural wunderkind he and his friends came across a terrible spirit in a club in Newcastle. John tried summoning another demon to deal with the fear-spirit, but lost control of the demon 'cos he didn't have its true name, or something like that. The demon broke loose, did horrible things to everybody present, and dragged a six-year-old girl's soul down to Hell. That was our intro to Nergal in John's universe; later there were incidents involving John getting a blood transfusion from him, among other things.
In Grim Adventures Nergal is a ghostlike fellow from the underworld with black skin, green eyes, fangs, and a desire to make friends. He's not very good at it and when he's frustrated or upset people die or get possessed.
In real-world mythology, Nergal is an ancient Sumero-Babylonian deity and the god of the netherworld, where he rules with his consort Ereshkigal. He is an evil god who brings war, pestilence, fever and devastation. He is sometimes regarded as representing the sinister aspect of the sun god Shamash. He is the subject of an Akkadian poem which describes his translation from heaven to the underworld. The foremost center of his cult was the city Kuthu. His attributes are the club and the sickle.
