I believe I may have my first troll.

worst writing iv ever seen how in the heck can u write like that expecting others to actualy enjoy it
Bit silly really, given that the reviews before have lines like 'Hurry up and write the next chapter.' and 'He also suggested -- in very strong terms -- that you not stop writing.', but I suppose monkey went to review straight from reading and so didn't realise how much of a contrast he'd be.
I told monkey that I ask myself that question every time I sit down to write, was generally polite to him, and went away. Still, I am amused. Troll in the dungeons!

Date: 2004-05-29 08:59 am (UTC)Me, I have no confidence when it comes to writing, which is part of why I don't do any anymore. Used to write a lot, stopped about the time I was 12. Wasn't half bad, but only really had one story to tell at the time and decided I didn't want to tell the rest of it. Thanks to you I'm considering writing again, but given all my other time commitments it's still not a sure thing.
The thing that really gets me every time I start considering it these days is that either I don't have a plot in mind, in which case there is no point in writing, or I have a plot in mind, in which case I don't want to ruin and disrespect that plot by writing it badly, so I end up not writing it at all. That and, I worry about my writing style drifting, since it tends to vary widely depending on what I'm reading at the time. I'm not sure I could stay in a stable writing style long enough to finish a piece.

Date: 2004-05-29 09:35 am (UTC)Well, it's not like I'm inclined to believe the writing judgment of anyone who can't be bothered to capitalise, spell 'actually' correctly, or type out all of 'I've' and 'you', you know? I mean, if- say- Stephen King were to show up on FictionAlley, and he said Hellblazer: Hogwarts stunk, then I might listen. But he'd have to prove that he was Stephen King first. (Although I would settle for a cogent, intelligent argument that backed up its points with examples of bad writing on my part, regardless of whether Mr. King were involved or not.) Besides, after the other reviews I've received so far- not to mention the reactions of my beta readers- I figure one flamer isn't really a problem.
Thanks to you I'm considering writing again, but given all my other time commitments it's still not a sure thing.
I'm glad to know I'm at least helping someone by example. For what it's worth, I do a lot of my writing in between other things that I'm actually supposed to be doing- most of Hellblazer: Hogwarts is the result of stolen moments here and there. That's why it takes so long.

Yeah, I have some trouble with absorbing the style or mannerisms from whatever I'm reading, myself. That's part of why I didn't launch straight into Who Ya Gonna Owl? as soon as I got back from Florida- I had to reread what had already been written, plus some Rowling. It's harder when I'm doing original fic, since all I have to go on is my own material. I have to reread what's already been written six or seven times before I feel that I've got my style back in order.

I have a personal rule that if someone can't at least express themselves in a coherent manner, I reserve the right to disregard anything they have to say.

Date: 2004-06-02 04:45 pm (UTC)At the book signing that I went to, Terry Pratchett said(To me!) that "Some characters I won't be able to kill off." I think Granny is one of them.
