1. No using the fanfic as an excuse not to work on Ira, Kenny, and the rest of the hard SF I'm supposed to be writing.
2. No splitting any given favoured character into more than three or four alternate versions inside my head just so that I can fiddle with sequences of events I never intend to write anyway.
3. No sending Lord Peter Wimsey's nephew to Hogwarts.
4. Or any of his sons.
5. I have not seen enough of the Sherlock Holmes in the 24th Century (or whatever century) cartoon to do anything whatsoever with it in terms of crossovers.
6. Minas Tirith is not a Citie of One Thousande Surprises.
7. Neither is Sam Vimes allowed to arrest the Valar. He hasn't got jurisdiction.
8. Gratuitously playing Hide the Crossover Reference and See Who Notices is really not nice.
9. There are other ficverses than Arda and the Potterverse. They make just as good foundation stock.
10. Charles Constantine, Superintendent, NWMP is not in ANY WAY related to John Constantine, Right and Utter Bastard. Charles was real, dammit.
11. Any and all external references in any Silver Corporal fanfic are to be to other works of Lester Dent. Not to anything to do with Sergeant Preston, and not to do with anything of my own original fiction.
12. Skippy's List Rule #87 is more of a guideline than an actual rule.
13. There are perfectly valid forms of fanfic that have NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with crossovers.
14. Or with stuffing an established universe full of original characters to illustrate a sadly neglected sector of the author's world, thank you.
...there will be more as events warrant, but right now I'm in the middle of reading Murder Must Advertise and I had this horrid image of Lord Peter attempting to help out in the fight against Grindelwald.

Date: 2004-05-04 06:57 pm (UTC)Now that that's out of the way, I've been enjoying both Hellblazer: Hogwarts and Who You Gonna Owl? immensely since I was pointed at them by a friend a couple months ago. You've got a great comic style and I'm eagerly looking forward to the next installment of each!
Re: Velgarth Fanfic
Date: 2004-05-04 07:03 pm (UTC)As for the other part... also thank you! I'm glad people are enjoying them. I'm currently working on the next Hellblazer: Hogwarts segment, but I had to take a brief detour in order to write the (Eru forgive me) Silmarillion/Discworld crossover that was trying to gnaw its way out of my head.

Date: 2004-05-07 05:53 pm (UTC)<nods> It's always safer to stay away from the authors with the snarling lawyers. Although I understand why she feels that way, I can't help but regard it as a slap in the face to the fan tradition out of which she came. <sigh>
As for the other part... also thank you!
You're quite welcome. And worry not about that detour; I enjoyed Vimes and Valar quite a bit, too -- in fact, I posted a link to it in the discussion forum I have over on ezBoard. (Already one satisfied customer has thanked me profusely, and I pass his gratitude on to you.)

Gimli glanced sidelong at Legolas, who was trying very hard not to laugh.
"Ketchup on the first one's free, and that's cutting me own throat," Dibbler added.
"I do not know this 'ketchup' of which you speak."

"Why not? You got it wrong. . ."

Date: 2004-05-02 06:41 pm (UTC)Short version. Sherlock Holmes was suspended in some sort of strange mixture at the moment of his death, after survivng that fall from the mountain when he and Moriarty clashed for the "final time" and living to a ripe old age.
Flash forward to the 22nd century, New London. If you commit a crime and get caught, you get a nice little trip to the de-crimeatizer. A machine which sucks the criminal tendacies right out of your head and makes you a decent, law-abiding citizen.
But for some reason, the machine isn't working. Crime is on the rise and one New Scotland Yard Inspector (Her last name starts with a V, that's all I can remember) is convinced that somehow, Moriarty has returned.
As her ancestor was a friend of Holmes, she knows where his body is being kept, since the container was entrusted to him so long ago. Using a new process, Holmes is revived, given an education in the 22nd century, and set on Moriarty's trail. With him is Watson; a compudroid, who, after reading the original Dr. Watson's journals, becomes convinced it is Dr. Watson. Even has a mask so it looks like watson. It wears a cloak over the rest of it's body. Interestingly, that robot may be the only thing that kept Holmes sane. So long as "Watson" was there, Holmes had something he knew.
Holmes even moved back into 22B Baker Street, which was still there.
Moriarty, it turns out, is a clone created from the original's (whose quite dead, BTW) tissue and being a clone, knows everything the original knew. The renegade geneticist who created him was hoping for a servant, but wound up being a servant.
Interestingly. Holmes was very much in character. He was a bastard, ("I shall have to get help from the female") disliked the fact that the inspector was female and was pretty much everything you might expect from a 19th century man. Albeit one as exceptional as Holmes.
No mention was made of Holmes' morphine habit, but with VR, he probably didn't need it.
