If you're like me, and I know I am, you're an American who's got enough books lying around to build a fairly impact-proof one person shelter. You might have loved 'em all once, but you haven't read some of 'em in ages, and the used bookstore only bought half your bag the last time you paid a visit. The library's book sale was back in March, and you made the mistake of buying more from them than you donated for them to sell- so what do you do?

You go to http://www.booksforsoldiers.com/ and look for a member of the U. S. Armed Forces who's bored out of his or her skull and has an interest in whatever the heck it is you've got all over your bookshelf.

G'wan. We can't send packages or letters to Any Soldier / Sailor / Airman / Bad-Ass Jarhead / Coastie any more, because of security reasons, but this is a site that has addresses of individual soldiers and specific units- or addresses of contact points for members of the Armed Forces who want to remain anonymous, but are still going bugnuts because there's only so many times you can read the same material. I'll be going over the shelves when I get home- there's gotta be something that I've got that'll match up with somebody's needs listed at the web site.

I'm not saying this as someone who's in favour of the war in Iraq. I'm not saying this as someone who's against the war in Iraq. I'm saying this as someone who's got military men scattered all over her family and who figures that, everything else aside, these guys are trying to do their jobs without going 'round the bend from boredom. If I've got books they could use, why on earth not? And, hey, could always do with another penpal or three.

Books for Soldiers: Care Packages for the Mind

Edited to add: They also do stuff for UK soldiers, but right now they don't seem to have any specific requests from members of the UK Armed Forces. A few pointers towards support sites for them, though.

That is EXTREMELY cool, will definitely throw something together. Thanks for passing the site on!

This is very cool, but I'm actually making a pedantic comment on the edit.

It's the "UK Armed Forces", not the "Royal Armed Forces". This is because while it's the "Royal Navy" and the "Royal Air Force", it's very definitely the "British Army". The Royal Army lost the English Civil War.
