J. Alfred needs your help!

Okay, now that I've done that, does anyone here want a look at the stuff I'm working on writing? I'm partway through the next segment of Hellblazer: Hogwarts, but it involves Snape, so I have to move slowly in order to get the much-abused Potions Master right. I've started on the next part of the GB/HP crossover ("Egon, where do we keep the owl treats?"), but it's not ready to go to anyone yet. And I've got about half of my original story about Kiyoshi Ikeshoji, one of the last few surviving Imperial Japanese Mounted Police, written and ready for looking-over.

Heh - the two you've sent I gobbled right up, sorry I didn't reply back. :) I'm having trouble making time for writing. There's always time for reading. ;)

I'm feeling dumb at the moment, though - I kind of don't quite seem to understand the story you just sent me this morning. I mean, I know the Dr. is lying, but I can't figure out quite what he's done. I might just be tired, I'll try reading it again, later.

Strictly speaking, the doctor isn't lying. He's permitting a deception to take place- one that I heard about in RL last year, in a radio interview with a World War II veteran. The vet had tried to sign up with the Army but was a couple of pounds underweight. The examining doctor, who was sympathetic to the kid's desire to serve, coughed and said, "There's a water cooler in the next room. Water weighs eight pounds to the gallon. I'm going to be in the waiting room a while, and when I come back I'll write down whatever you weigh then."

The kid drank five pounds' worth of water in the space of three or four minutes, got into the Army, and spent the next several hours using every bathroom in sight.

It's worth noting that the famous Superintendent of the Northwest Mounted Police, Samuel Benford Steele, was so skinny when he first signed up with the Mounties that he had to wrap a sash around himself under his clothes in order to fit the uniform properly. He got over it relatively quickly.

Hm, so it does seem to fit with Benford Steele, quite possibly. Although I was surprised at the upright Preston committing a deception. However, he was young, and very motivated.

For what it's worth, he did pull a few deceptions in his (radio) canon career- all pointed squarely at the bad guys, true, but they were things like passing himself off as someone who wanted to enter his animal in a dog-vs-bear fight or growing a beard so as to infiltrate a gang. He's done it a few times; he had to at least have the capacity for deceit. I figure something this small, when he was very young and very motivated, would be within the limits of his conscience.

Could do with a spot of beta-ing on a piece I've got here; I'd like to send it to Weird Tales now that they've rejected "The Price". I've edited it down to around 2500 words. Original stuff, not fanfic.

Anything else is just comments-very-welcome at this stage, since none of the other stuff is complete yet.

*thumps head with heel of hand* I knew that. *sigh* Okay, yeah, as soon as I get it html-formatted I'll post what's done so far. It's still a first draft and it's only half done, but it would be good to know any questions or criticisms people who aren't, y'know, living inside my head might have about the setting.
