Those of you who have played NationStates may be aware that I got into the game in late November of last year and have played as the Commonwealth of Tuonela since. The rest of you will not understand what I am talking about, so I suggest a visit to http://www.nationstates.net for some quick clarification.

Today, in honour of the game's one-year anniversary, every single nation got the same issue. Namely: how is your country going to react to the shocking revelation that the world is a year old in "RL Units"? Our options were something like 'public morals are horrible - shoot all the partiers and lock everyone up', 'lock up the police and party like nobody's business', 'let everyone do just as they please', 'meditate on the meaning of reality - do we have free will or are we part of some elaborate simulation game for the pleasures of beings we know not', or follow the suggestion of a Perl whiz and sometime author named Max Barry who said 'I plan to spend the evening with a good book, everyone else can celebrate in their own way'.

Tempted as I was to follow the Max Barry suggestion, given that Barry is the author of the book that the game is promoting (said book being Jennifer Government- it's available at Amazon), I ultimately decided that Tuonelans were going to meditate on the meaning of existence.

This is our current national description:

The Commonwealth of Tuonela - a New York Times Democracy
Motto: "It's dark! It's cold! But we've got food and beer!"

Civil Rights: Excellent
Economy: Strong
Political Freedoms: Superb
UN Delegate for the Arctic Circle region - also regional founder

The Commonwealth of Tuonela is a massive, environmentally stunning nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 2.027 billion enjoy a sensible mix of personal and economic freedoms, while the political process is open and the people's right to vote held sacrosanct.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Social Equality, and Social Welfare. The average income tax rate is 65%. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Book Publishing industry.

The people elect the Supreme Court justices directly, the nation is currently revamping its entire education system, children are raised bilingual from an early age, and residents firmly believe there is no spoon. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Tuonela's national animal is the poro, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the kantele.

Tuonela is ranked 23rd in the region and 80,988th in the world for Largest Mining Sector.

Somehow the idea of two billion polytheistic Finns who refuse to buy into the illusion perpetrated by the Machines... appeals to me.
