Song of the day!
Aug. 15th, 2003 09:02 amPerhaps it is only that my area of New Jersey did not experience even enough of a disruption to throw off my clock, or that I have a long track record of being entirely too cheerful for anyone's good during times of disaster, or even that I stopped at Starbucks this morning and got something called a 'gloppy square' that looks like it was designed by a small child looking for a sugar fix. But this morning I am feeling quite bouncy, despite the power failure to the east and north of me, and I should like to share with you the song I am trying to get my boss to put on our hold music today. I understand it was written as something of a response to the LAST big honkin' NYC blackout:
Miami 2017 - Billy Joel
aka Seen The... well, you'll figure it out.
Seen the lights go out on Broadway
I saw the Empire State laid low
And life went on beyond the Palisades
They all bought Cadillacs
And left here long ago
We held a concert out in Brooklyn
To watch the island bridges blow
They turned our power down
And drove us underground
But we went right on with the show!
I've seen the lights go out on Broadway
I saw the ruins at my feet
You know we almost didn't notice it
We'd seen it all the time
On Forty-Second Street
They burned the churches up in Harlem
Like in that Spanish civil war
The flames were everywhere
But no one really cared
It always burned up there before
I've seen the lights go out on Broadway
I watched the mighty skyline fall
The boats were waiting at the Battery
The union went on strike
They never sailed at all
They sent the carrier out from Norfolk
To pick the Yankees up for free
They said that Queens could stay
They blew the Bronx away
And sank Manhattan out at sea
You know those lights were bright on Broadway
But that was so many years ago
Before we all lived here in Florida
Before the Mafia
Took over Mexico
There are not many who remember
They say a handful still survive
To tell the world about
The way the lights went out
And keep the memory alive...
Thanks, folks.
