On the turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say which we won't understand

"Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others' suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
The turning away"

It's a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting its shroud over all we have known

Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud

On the wings of the night
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite in a silent accord

Using words you will find are strange
Mesmerised as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night

(guitar solo)

No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away from the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
No more turning away?

I read the BBC News. Don't read this if you don't want to see me froth at the mouth. )

And now that I've ranted, I'm going to be quiet. I've said about enough for today and I fully expect to hear from people telling me how wrongheaded I am, but for now I've got work to do, and then I have to leave to work at the memorial concert. I'll be back later.

Well,

I'm back. The concert was canceled on account of wind. 40 MPH gusts of wind due to offshore hurricane, vs. big racks of heavy stage lights suspended from scaffolding by chains, directly over people unable to run for their lives because of musical instruments in their laps? No contest. Ah, well, Verdi's Requiem would have been lovely to hear.

I'm feeling a bit better now, but I'm also swearing off the news for a while. Any country or reporter's news. About nearly anything. I just don't want to hear it, and I think at this point I've heard enough that I've earned that right. I'll go back to it in a few days, but for now? No. 9/10ths of it is stuff I can't do anything about; I've accumulated more than enough psychic poisoning from worrying about things like that, thank you. I'm going to sit back, do my work, have my fun, do my exercise, study, admire the kind of universe where an organism like a spider could evolve such that it could produce a fiber as fine and as marvelous as spider-silk, whatever... and just not worry about it for a while.

I feel better already.
