Another way you know you're me:
Jun. 4th, 2003 11:07 pmYour brain, in an effort to entertain itself during your nightly REM sleep, spins up a fantastical tale about thousands of American citizens rising up across the country in response to a pressing national need for which there was no official structure... and it's the U.S. Geological Survey.
That's right, my subconscious mind thinks that downtime is a perfect time to spin alternate histories for bureaus of the bloody Department of the Interior. This happened about a week ago, but a BBC News article about GPS scientists spurred the recollection. All I can say is: the FRELL?

Date: 2003-06-05 06:13 am (UTC)The mass media in question were three in number: the early parts of the dream and a few motifs later in it came from the Infinite Tapestry sourcebook for the Umbra in third ed Mage, and the other two parts involved a heavy dose of The Matrix and a cameo appearance by a couple of elves (including Elrond Half-elven) from the LOTR movie.
There was a fountain in a public area some distance from a vast ocean; the fountain, normally fed from the River of Language, was running dry and could not be fixed by normal means. Pouring a cup of the River's water directly into it might save it; pouring a cup of the ocean's water into it almost certainly would. Unfortunately, this idea was opposed by Agent Smith - hence the Running Away From motif. The early part of the dream involved inadvertently going through a sort of symbolic rebirth - first feeling very still and held in place, then being dropped down a tunnel and shot into the air wet and briefly naked and bloody. I say briefly because the tunnel sent me out through a wooded lake, so I came out clean and wound up clothed on shore some moments later. (In the dream, I thought 'oh, this is the Epiphamy of Motherhood in the book, isn't it' - not that it was, but that's how I recognised what was going on.) That's when the chase was on...
I had to outrun Agent Smith to get a cup, and then to get that cup to the ocean. Several times I briefly eluded him by taking a three-dimensional route out - that is, I went through the floor or ceiling by several floors and then kept running from there, and since he couldn't replicate himself in the dream he had to follow me on foot. When I dived into the ocean with the cup he couldn't follow, although Elrond was there somewhere talking to some of the other elves about the pull of the sea... I ultimately wound up putting the water into the wrong part of the fountain, and staring at the fountain's decreasing trickle even as I knew it was because the world's minority languages were dying out and no one was preserving them. That's when I woke up.
That's a bit more like my preferred sort of dream, for what it's worth.
