Stupid SARS. First it confines my friend in Hong Kong to her home and daily business. Then it freaks my parents to the point where I pretty much have to go to Alaska instead of China. Then it scares my friend in Wuhan, who is just fine but who is under the impression that I work directly with SARS patients for some reason (must write back to him tonight). THEN it gets Mom so spooked she won't let [livejournal.com profile] mountainspeak stay at our house for her vacation, which is just STUPID, because if she's a silent carrier then I'll just bring the disease home with me after meeting her, won't I? Arrgh, argh, argh. I'm the one who studied epidemiology, dammit. Unless something evil happens (God forbid) in the next few days, there's nothing to fear... I even tried explaining a bit of this to my dad, but he's worried about the disease too, and agrees with Mom. Stupid!

*sigh*

Well, there is not much I can do about that.

On another note, after some consultation with the good people of [livejournal.com profile] 10000bullets, I decided to check out Netflix.com. Lo and behold, unlike very long ago when I first examined their wares, they had a bigger Hong Kong section than any rental place I know of. I would ordinarily say I probably can't afford a persistent $20/month expense, but considering that I rent three or four Blockbuster movies per month anyway, and tend to buy junk food while I'm there, I'm not spending all that much more. I signed on for the ten day trial period. They'll be sending me The Seventh Curse, Hitman, and Hero Beyond The Boundary of Time. Hitman appears to be a fairly straightforward Jet Li-with-guns flick. The Seventh Curse has appeared on several of my favourite bad movie websites; anything that crams Chow Yun-Fat into a tweed jacket, hands him a pipe, and makes him act like a Call of Cthulhu investigator is worth looking at if only for the incredulous laughter value. And as for Hero Beyond the Boundary of Time... well, let me find the summary for you.

"Tony Leung Chiu-Wai stars as Wai, a eunuch living in the 17th century who's shot into the 20th century (via a device H.G. Wells would envy) on a mission to find the perfect virgin bride for the Emperor. Unfortunately, the Emperor's enemies have also figured out the secret to time travel and have sent two killers into the future to hunt down Wai."

Again, incredulous laughter value... Tony Leung as a eunuch? The man was the hottest thing on two feet in Hard Boiled*! And - he's coming to the twentieth century to find a virgin? Um? What is he going to do, pick up a baby and bip back to eighteen years before the Emperor needs to get married so the kid can be raised in isolation? But seriously, for all that the people of Netflix have given it a crappy rating, it looks muy promising. If only as an example of a Feng Shui movie. C'mon, it's got eunuchs, time travel, weird tech, and murder. Gotta love at least some of that.

Speaking of which, I have to find where I put my Feng Shui main book. Willy Wing wants to come out and play as a full blown character. Dramatic hook: his first memories are of an awful lot of very loud noises, and then somebody nice stuck cotton in his ears and tried to calm him down with a lullabye, and then everything went nuts before he got handed back to his parents. He wants to find the guy and thank him. *sigh* Yes, it's the last baby out of the hospital in Hard Boiled, the one that widdled on Tequila's leg and put out the fire. I am, how you say, pathetic.

*Yes, this is the same Hard Boiled that starred Chow Yun-Fat. Chow might be Da Man, but honey, Tony Leung stole the show right out from under his feet so far as I'm concerned. I saw it last night and realized I had watched the movie before, it was just one of the early ones my Feng Shui gm had us watch and the title had slipped from my memory.
