My sister gets married on July 5th of this year. The church she's being married at does not allow the throwing of rice, not because of the urban legend about the birds, but because of liability problems if someone slips on it. Confetti takes forever to clean up and so do rose petals. Bubbles would stain the bridesmaids' taffeta skirts, so we're told. Live butterflies, pigeons, and other animals are right out (I personally like the idea of releasing white mice to the tune of "Cinderelly", but that's just me) for various reasons. Somehow she and Mom eventually decided on using clear acrylic or Lucite rods with ribbons tied around the end - issue them to guests and wave them around to look pretty. Dowels were ruled out on the grounds that without finished end caps they'd look like painted sticks, which is not what they're going for. Clear acrylic instead. I was asked to seek it out, beginning with the possibility of long drink stirrers / swizzle sticks at the restaurant supply store and going to crafts places if necessary.

I had no luck at M. & J. Frank's Restaurant and Bar Supply, so I went to AC Moore's. Nada. Not even the right size of wooden dowel, for that matter. Went to Michael's. Nothing. Went to The Rag Shop. Nothing. Went to Pier One Imports in the hopes of finding long glass stirrers instead. Nothing. Tried Home Depot. Still nothing. I came home and found some places online that sell Lucite or acrylic rods cut to specification and gave them to my mom.

I found nothing worth buying for my sister, but came home with a MASSIVE urge to bake bread, make soap, relearn knitting using metallized yarn, and learn how to spin strawraw wool into goldyarn.

I went back to Rag Shop and bought some yarn (ordinary - metallized is something like $7.99 for a very small bundle) and a pair of American size 7 needles. I'll be working up a 7" x 9" stockinette stitch block of solid gray as my practice piece before going on to knit a scarf to wear in Alaska - I found the pattern for the Harry Potter scarf online and it's as simple as can be. My only problem is that I like gray and green better than the other House colors, and anyway I can't find bronze yarn. Oh, well. I'll probably do some bread tomorrow...

On a less lighthearted note I got an email from my penpal in Wuhan saying he looks forward to me visiting China. I'm going to have to tell him I can't make it. I'm also going to be praying for him a lot as he informs me that on Friday he had to take a business trip to Guangzhou... well, we shall see.

Stupid SARS.
