camwynIt's the Totally Unofficial (Yet Highly Accurate) Table of Disaster Responder Profanity and Blasphemy!
This was more or less inspired by a friend who told me he'd seen some list that got compiled as a joke - he said it was a list of 'ten most appropriate uses of the word 'fuck' in human history', with #1 being 'What the fuck was that?', city governor of Hiroshima, 6 August 1945. This is really not nice humor at all. It's not even what you'd call funny, I don't think; it's just a defense mechanism after a class like I had today. I have used several of these myself in the line of work.
Ouch - Single family fire
Damn - Multiple family fire - add more a's for more families/apartments/people involved
Oh God - residential/business fire with fatality
Oh My God - large residential/business fire with fatalities, or smaller fire with multiple fatalities
Jesus, Mary and Joseph (var. "Jesus, Mary and Buddha" or "Jesus, Mary and Fnord") - Paddington*-class incident, or Foxboro Incident**-class discovery
Oh Dear God - nail bombing; bombing that includes secondary device timed to explode after rescuers arrive
Holy God - explosion or fire w/approx. 100 or more casualties
Fuck! - OKC bombing-class incident, or Pentagon as of 11 September incident
Holy Mary Mother of God, or Sweet Merciful Buddha - WTC-class incident
Holy Fuck! - Bhopal***-class incident, although Bhopal deserves to blend into the next category of profanity/blasphemy as well
Holy Fucking Shit - despite the Onion's use of this to classify all of Sept. 11th's disasters into one group, this is best reserved for disasters or attacks ranging between the Bhopal Incident and total city destruction in scope
*Collision of passenger train with, I believe, freight train. England. 31 fatalities incl. train driver.
**2000 incident in Irvine, CA wherein a residential property was found to have not only C4 explosive and blasting caps on premises, but also over 100 vials of anthrax, nerve gas, Sarin, and other compounds being developed into aerosol form for use as weapons - go here for more info
***The single worst industrial accident in human history, a gas leak from a Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India at midnight, 2-3 December, 1984. 3,500 people died. Thousands more were hurt, blinded, or worse. There is a web site here but I am afraid to click on the entry graphic because of what I might see, and that ought to tell you something about this class of disaster.
