"There has been one report of an 86-year-old man who experienced serious symptoms after eating two entire bags of menthol cough drops every day for 20 years."
ETA:
I read the linked study. The gentleman in question was... ooof. No indication of either neurotypicality or neurodiversity, no indication of developmental issues, but he claimed never to have seen a primary care physician before so who knows what might have gone undiagnosed. The cough drop habit was apparently how he chose to treat halitosis- there was no indication in the study of whether the man had ever attempted mouthwash or not, just 'no smoking, no alcohol, no illicit drug use, no prescription medications, daily ingestion of two bags of menthol-rich cough droplet for twenty years, taking these droplets mainly for halitosis'. By 'serious symptoms' they meant his neighbors found him unconscious- the study is titled 'Menthol Toxicity: An unusual case of coma'- and also there were a whole bunch of neurological and digestive sequelae that required dialysis, among other things. Full recovery of function six months later, once he took the emergency doctors' orders not to consume menthol cough drops ever again.
