camwynI do not know how loud it is, exactly, but the other day when I was birdwatching from shore late in the afternoon I heard a noise I thought was one of the jets landing at Logan. It was not. It was the sound of the evening ferry, passing on the far side of Snake Island.
Google Maps indicates that the distance between where I was when the noise caught my attention and the probable location of the boat at that time was around 2500 feet away in a straight line. This is a ferry I take to the office multiple times a week on days when I have to go into the city. I was hearing its engines at a level somewhere between the hum of my refrigerator and the sound of my kitchen air conditioner.

... uh, if the ferry engines are THAT loud, I'm buying over-the-ear hearing protectionkthxbye. I've got tinnitus already. I don't need more of this shit.
Also, Eric Waller, wherever you are, you son of a bitch who shrieked in my left ear- the one I primarily have tinnitus in now- when I was in sixth or seventh grade at a pitch I have never heard another human male achieve and a volume that actively hurt, because you thought it was somehow funny: I hope you get testicular torsion.
