From what I understand, Peter canonically made his own suit in pretty much every depiction, with the exception of that incident in Germany where he lost his luggage or it got stolen or something and he had to buy a party costume from a local store and wound up fighting crime in a suit with DER SPINNENMANN printed across the back. This means one of two things.
One, Peter's time in the New York City public school system included shop classes that taught sewing- I had a semester of shop class that taught sewing back in fifth grade but we never got as far as using machines- and that went as far as teaching the kids how to use a sewing machine on stretchy fabrics. I don't think NYC public schools would teach the use of sergers, you'd probably have to go to a fashion-oriented school for that. In which case, Aunt May would be inclined to think that Peter was reverting to childhood interests when he got his middle school sewing machine out and insisted on using it in his room. Bonus for the possibility of Peter trying to knock out a couple of blue and red T-shirts so he could show them to Aunt May if she asked what he was doing with that fabric he brought home.
Or two, Peter had no actual background in sewing and Aunt May was mystified by his sudden desire to learn, go to Joann's, etc. That could at least lead to a couple of touching bonding scenes post-Uncle Ben's death when Peter gives up on library books and/or Youtube videos and asks Aunt May to please teach him how to sew.
