Today's fun fact: 'causing injury in a physical exercise or training program' is an official crime under Massachusetts state law, in the same 'crimes against the person' category as carjacking, kidnapping, and mayhem.
I do not know the exact legal definition of mayhem in this case but it's chapter 265 section 14 of the Massachusetts General Laws. Ch 265 section 13 is 'assault and battery on an elderly or handicapped person' and ch 265 section 15 is 'assault with intent to murder or maim' so I'm assuming mayhem is a specific category of assault.
