the people across the street are redoing their roof. all the shingles have been stripped off.

I did not know how quickly that could be done. Or how much noise it made.

Or how much hammering was involved int he next steps.

or what the thing that sounds like a leafblower is for.

I am buying guitarist-approved or drummer-approved soundproofing curtains for this room.



.... did I mention our return-to-office date has been moved up to January 18th? Because we'll be working from home until at least January 18th.

Hopefully if it has been going on that quickly, it will go away just as fast.

I am glad that living so far out in the country, whenever I am making construction noise, that there are few, if any, that can even hear it.

Oh, they've long since finished. I think they had it done by sunset. It was just- they had someone using a leafblower or some similar device. I'm not sure if it was to sweep the detritus from their work towards the bulk disposal bin (it was the size of a small railroad car) or if it was for use on the roof itself or what, but it sounded like every leaf blower that every lawn care service around here uses. And there are a LOT of people around here who use those services, because many of these local houses are two- or three-family houses owned by landlords who live elsewhere in town. So that's an autumn full of leafblower noise. Followed by a winter of snowblower noise, because most of these places hire people to clean the walks after a snowfall, with the possible exception of the house next door, where I think someone shovels (they don't do it well, whatever it is they do).

I can handle the jet planes' noises. I grew up with worse, living under LaGuardia Airport's final approach. The windows damp a lot of that noise. But when multiple homes within an eighth of a mile all have gas-powered RRRAAASRRRRRA!AHHHH noisemakers blowing their lawns clean...

The roofers were just an advance warning and a reminder of last year. I should have done this long ago, to block out the summertime lawn mowing services. Better late than never.

Yes, I see now that the regular barrage of engine noise could be undesirable. I raised my children along the final approach along one of the flight paths (28R) at the Pittsburgh Airport. Closed windows did help substantially, but many summers taught us to lip-read or temporarily suspend neighborhood chit chat until it had passed. Funny thing though, after a while most seemed to become immune, or at least not notice the jets quite as much.
