Have jumped on bandwagon

ka_crow. I went to http://www.nationstates.net and created myself a country, I'll be running it for a while to see how it turns out...
'The Commonwealth of Tuonela is a tiny, safe nation, renowned for its devotion to social welfare. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 5 million love a good election, and the government gives them plenty of them. Universities tend to be full of students debating the merits of various civil and political rights, while businesses are tightly regulated and the wealthy viewed with suspicion.
The government -- a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked, socially-minded morass -- concentrates mainly on Social Welfare, although Healthcare and Education are on the agenda. The average income tax rate is 42%, but much higher for the wealthy. A tiny private sector is dominated by the Information Technology industry.
Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown. Tuonela's national animal is the sampo, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the ilmar.'
We joined the Arctic Circle region. We're one of eight. A country that I suspect was created by an actual resident of Finland joined just ahead of me. Waiting to either get pummeled or have to trot out my lone sentence of Finnish now.

-- Lorrie, who hasn't read her Kalevala, but has listened closely to her Sibelius. ;)

Date: 2002-11-26 12:12 pm (UTC)All the ones who forget to vote. We just decided to make it compulsory. What worries me a little is that for a land of the dead, we grew by a million people overnight and the only decision we'd made before that was to allow citizens to designate where their taxes went. Oh well.
And for the record I would have used the name of Louhi's personal region of Karelia if I could've remembered the actual Finnish name - sadly all that came to mind was the translation, which was something like 'Coldwater Farm', and that really didn't have the right ring to it. Once the compulsory election thing goes through I might change the First Citizen's name to Kyllikki or something instead.
