Damn, the guys who handled delivery, installation, and old-device-haul-away for Home Depot this morning were good.

My Kenmore washer was starting to fail and I didn't think Sears was likely to be able to provide repair services on any kind of ongoing basis. Wasn't like I had been all that fond of that machine, either; I got it back in January of 2013 largely because it was one of their least expensive models and had the least amount of weird technology I could find, not because of good reviews or high efficiency. I figured I was probably better off finding a more efficient, well-performing model, esp. since the economy is not currently at its brightest and if nothing else, a durable goods purchase could probably do some good.

I found an LG high efficiency washing machine that had decent reviews on Consumer Reports and that would fit into my space in the basement, and ordered it from Home Depot last week. It's got a cubic foot more capacity than my old washer, but it's only about three inches larger externally- I think the difference is probably due to it not having a central agitator post. Either that or it's deeper. No wifi, and the only smart technology requires me to stand next to a port on the machine with my phone pointed directly at the port to pick up sound, not even NFC tech. I'm not happy about that aspect, but all the HE washers I found for a similar price either had more connectivity or significantly worse reviews. (I work in IT. I have never EVER been comfortable with the Internet of Things. Mirai was only the beginning.)

The delivery service contacted me via phone yesterday to say they'd be delivering today sometime between 7 AM and 11 AM and that they'd call me half an hour before arrival. Phone call this morning came at 6:40 to say they'd be in within half an hour, 45 minutes tops. They were here by 7:10, they disconnected the old machine and hauled it away (delivery was free but I paid $25 extra to have them get rid of the Kenmore for me), and they had the new machine in place and connected by 7:30.

All direct contact with the guys avoided, of course. I don't think there was any point at which they were closer than 15-20 feet, and masks were worn. They got a $40 tip. Hopefully that was the right amount. I'll be praising them on the customer satisfaction survey, too.
