As an American, but not a barbarian, I have an electric kettle. (Look, the whole "OMG you have no KETTLES how do you BOIL WATER for your WHAT YOU USE THE MICROWAVE YOU BARBARIANS" thing came up on Tumblr years ago and has been in my head ever since. I had an electric kettle at the time, because it's just easier if your primary source of caffeine is a French press, but it's a little bit of a sore point.) This is it:



My sister did not know this, and bought me a kettle for Christmas. This is it:




Given the contrast between the two of them all I can think is that my sister bought me a villain kettle for Christmas.

... people use the microwave, seriously? Before I married someone with an electric kettle I used the stove! Microwave sounds barbaric to me too.

The kettles/microwaving thing was entertaining for a little while, but like bagged milk discourse, I am very tired now.

I visited my parents for Christmas this year and went to make tea. Asked my mom if she had a kettle, because I knew she made tea fairly regularly and also because I'm not in NJ often enough to remember how the kitchen stuff is stored. No kettle... but we are a different kind of barbarian in my family, apparently; she said to use a pot.

Didn't really expect that, but okay, I'm good with it.

She...uses a pot to make tea? That's so time-consuming. Maybe she needs a dark side kettle for a gift...

I'm going to try the new one a few times, I think. One issue I have with my current kettle is that I usually use a mug that holds something in the vicinity of two cups. If I fill the kettle to the max capacity line, I get two mugs of tea worth of water and... sort of a pathetic amount left that might fill about half the next mug. I think the current kettle holds a liter at max. The villain kettle's max line is marked 1.5 liters. Might be worth it to be able to boil up three+ mugs worth at a time. If it behaves to my liking, Mom may be next on the list.

Honestly, I used to not see a problem with using a microwave....until we got an electric kettle and I can't put my finger on it, but the kettle water is just better and so much easier and doesn't make the cup nuclear hot.

Your two kettles are clearly destined to be either partners fighting crime, or mortal nemeses. Possibly both in succession.

(And yes, as an American who's used an electric kettle for decades, and sees all the habitual tea drinkers I know do the same or use a stovetop kettle instead, I got very tired of the ZOMG BARBARIAN AMERICANS!!! discourse very fast. Customs and priorities and pickiness all differ, but also: come on.)
