My doctor has me eating refrigerator oatmeal 4-5 times a week to bring down my cholesterol levels. As of August of last year it had been working well enough to get me out of the edge of statin territory. They took blood yesterday at the WTC responder health screening; in a week or so I should have results, including my current cholesterol status.

One can get very tired of oatmeal, sweet or savoury, after more than a year of the stuff four to five times a week. For some people I know it's a reassuring comforting thing that reminds them of childhood or their native culture or whatever. That's fine for them. For me, not so much.

Today I dumped a bag of gummi fish into my bowl of oatmeal before eating the whole thing.

(In my defense they were SmartSweets Sweet Fish, with no fat, no cholesterol, three grams of sugar, no sugar alcohols, and 100% of the USRDA of fiber. I mean, they're still candy fish in my morning oatmeal, but if I'm going to have a SCREW THIS moment with regards to my oatmeal this is probably the least worst way to do it.)

Now I want gummy bears. Smart Sweets look like they'll fit in my diet.

Good for you if you can avoid the statins. I'm in heavy statin territory for now and eating oatmeal every day. My cholesterol is absurdly low, so I'm hoping they'll start to back off the drugs when I see the cardio again in Dec.

Fortunately, I like the oatmeal, perhaps becauseI always have brown sugar and always eat it before it gets too mush or cold.
