Aug. 26th, 2019 03:06 pmField tested the Herkimer diamond ear climbers yesterday, as they are probably the bulkiest of the climbers I've made so far.
Can someone who has no particular sensory issues or disorders wear them for 7+ hours without itch, pain, or annoyance? -- Yes. I had no significant issue with them for the most part. There were a few points at which I noticed them more than others, but nothing that was a real problem.
Can they be worn without problems while taking a phone call using a standard handset? -- No. They're a bit too bulky for holding the phone against my ear to work well.
Can they be worn in conjunction with earbuds? -- Yes. I use a pair of Skullcandy sound isolating earbuds connected to each other by a standard size wire, and there was neither contact nor interference.
Can they be worn in conjunction with a bicycle helmet? -- Surprisingly, yes. While one of the straps on my helmet did periodically brush up against them, the climbers stayed in place during a bike ride of somewhat more than ten miles, over the course of an hour.
Do they result in rash, inflammation, swelling, or discoloration of the skin? -- No. At least, not for me. The central wire on these is argentium silver; there is no copper in the alloy, unlike regular sterling. There's also no nickel. Someone who has skin contact issues with germanium, or with silver itself, would be another story.
Do they tarnish? -- Dude, the climbers are like a week old, tops. Not a lot of time to tarnish. That being said, argentium silver is much slower to tarnish than sterling or fine silver. It'll probably happen eventually. Also, I think the 28 gauge wire was a sterling alloy rather than argentium, so that part'll tarnish first.
Do they itch? -- Not noticeably.
