Assuming a lifetime of 2 years for my coffee grinder, and assuming a use pattern of 5 uses per week, 48 weeks out of the year, one use of the coffee grinder costs $0.05. Assuming it takes approximately 4 minutes to grind enough coffee to produce one batch of moka pot espresso- moka pots being the low tech stovetop way to do espresso, because I am not enough of a coffee snob to insist that only espresso produced via 9-12 bars of pressure through a machine the size of my torso counts- and a minimum wage of $12/hour, add eighty cents for the price of labor for enough coffee for a double shot of espresso, grinding by hand.
Cost of moka pot not included in this as the moka pot was a gift.
A Starbucks venti Americano at the nearest Sbux franchise costs $3.66 after taxes. The venti Americano contains four shots of espresso according to the Starbucks android app. Enough coffee for a quadruple shot can be ground at one go but will take approx. eight minutes so that's $1.60 to grind the coffee and $0.05 for a single use. To make four shots of decent moka pot espresso requires approximately 26-28 grams of coffee in my experience (where 'decent' means 'the way I like it').
It is possible to use a twelve ounce bag of George Howell Coffee Company's Tarrazu single origin coffee beans, which cost $15.12 dollars after taxes, and still wind up paying less for the homemade equivalent of a venti Americano including my own time spent grinding. At that price, the George Howell coffee would run about $1.15 dollars for the 26 grams needed, so add the labor cost and the amortized cost of a single use of the grinder and while it's still a high price, it's less than Sbux for the same amount of coffee and the work to do it.
If I walk into Stop and Shop and buy a twelve ounce bag of Peet's French Deep Roast Whole Bean Coffee for the current sale price of $7.99, after taxes, the total amount of money spent on the 26 grams of coffee necessary to produce a single venti Americano would be $0.65...
