Turns out you can get a pretty good shine on copper if you dip it in ketchup for a little bit and then wipe it off properly. Rinse, too, of course, unless you want to go around smelling like French fries.

Almost certainly. I remember using Worcestershire sauce to polish brass as a kid- same basic components.
