Did some examination of the mass transit routes between NY and Boston and have come to the conclusion that traveling down to Manhattan the day of the Jeopardy tryouts is not really practical. I'm going to need to stay in the NY/NJ area the night before. Should be able to catch a bus or a train back after the tryouts are over, though.

I am not looking forward to finding out what the NY area hotel prices are like. Last time I had to stay overnight in the city itself I think I got a bed in one of the youth hostels, but that was years ago.

My parents have an apartment with a sofa bed, but I'm afraid "the cool IT person who makes great shampoo" would be a bit of a hard sell.

Depends on where you stay. If you're in Manhattan, you can probably get away with $250 or so. Go to NJ and you can probably get a lot cheaper.

Do youth hostels have an age limit? I don't recall.
