Jan. 28th, 2016 01:30 pmAmerican Lung sent out a notice today with basic advance information for the climb on the 6th. We get our start times on the 4th, for one thing. We pick up our bibs etc. on the day of the event. They have 'elite', 'runner', and 'walker' categories; those of us, like myself, who registered in the walker category will be starting after the runners and elites. I am not sure exactly where the firefighters fit into all of this except that most people get sent into the stairwell every 10 seconds and firefighters go every 15.
I did not compile this notice or this time table. That's just what it said.
The other thing of note for me in particular is that they gave the specs on the stairwell this time. The building is 601 feet tall and has 41 floors. Most floors have 2 flights of stairs. There's a total of 789 steps. 9-10 stairs between landings, two mezzanine floors that have three flights each. Brief stairwell somewhere early in the climb. Most of the climb has right hand turns in the stairwell, but on the 28th floor it goes to left hand turns. I've been practicing in a stairwell with right hand turns, but my building has both kinds in two separate stairwells, so I went from floor -2 to floor 26, tested the door, found it wouldn't let me out, kept going to 28, then walked to the other stairwell and took left hand turns from 28 to 34.
Yeah, 34; turns out the right-hand stairwell goes to rooftop access on 33, but the left-hand stairwell goes one more floor and comes out in the HVAC tower or something. I don't know exactly, I didn't bother trying the door at the top. It's authorized personnel only and I haven't got a key. My only contact with the topmost door on these things is a touch with the palm of my hand so I can 'officially' conclude my climb for the day and go on to squats or lunges.
Today's climb therefore was -2 to 34 in Viva La Vida (Coldplay) + The Wings of Icarus (Celldweller) + 3:29 of "Moskau". Or, in more practical terms, 36 floors in 4:01+2:58+3:29 = ten minutes, twenty-eight seconds. Possibly 10:32 if one includes a second or two for time between songs and a single notification from my email program that temporarily paused the music. Either way, that's a decent time. Today's additional exercise was body weight squats (if you think I am going to bring weights with me on these things or try to stash weights at the top of the stairs, ahahaha, no). The six-week training app I'm using had me do 30 squats/60 sec. rest/28 squats/60 sec./30 squats/60 sec. rest/35 squats/60 sec./32 squats/60 sec./28 squats/60 sec./26 squats/60 sec./28 squats, for a total that is supposed to be 237 squats if I did not lose track of something. I think I am doing all right on that front, even if I do have to use alcohol wipes afterwards because there is no shower at the office.
