I wanted to post this yesterday, but couldn't get myself together enough to do it: my cat Shula had a stroke yesterday.

The doctors at Angell Animal Medical Center are wonderful people, but they'd apparently found other underlying medical problems that had never turned up before.

Shula is with Bast now.

I miss you, fuzzy boo.

It was the one and only time in my life I've ever been glad that I'm occasionally prone to horrible, horrible menstrual pain- because I was awakened at around 4:30 in the morning by cramps bordering on kidney stone levels of pain, and lugged myself to the bathroom to deal with it, and found him shortly after getting myself out of the bathroom. I'd been in bed for maybe three hours at that point, and he'd been happy and purring all over my lap right before I went to bed... so if nothing else at least I know I found him quickly after it happened.

Oh no. I'm so very sorry. There's never an easy way to lose a beloved pet, and he was a great one by every single account.

My sister was surprised when I told her back in 2005 that Shula had been roaming the kitchen making mournful meowing noises after Tiki died. She hadn't thought he was a particularly attached or affectionate cat. Based on the ten years I had him versus the one that she did, I think I can humbly beg to differ.

The doctor was very good about that, and had him in an oxygen cage to make his breathing easier (there was fluid in his lungs). He was purring right up until the end; I had my hand on his side so I could feel it and so he knew he wasn't alone.
