Some people, I am led to understand, dream of flying. This has never been a common thing for me. I don't think I ever actually dreamt of flying until after reading about it in an Omni Magazine article about lucid dreaming- and even then it was usually via the Douglas Adams method of throwing myself at the ground and being distracted at the last second, which I am almost sure is not how it is supposed to go.

This is not to say that I don't have dreams of locomotion types that humans can't actually physically accomplish on their own. I do. But up until now it's been running on all fours. Usually out of frustration with not being able to move fast enough on all twos, and it's always been unguligrade running- on the tips of my central three fingers, like the primitive multi-toed species of horses. I remember that detail clearly, even though otherwise thinking about 'how am I doing this?' in the dreams inevitably ends up with me falling all over myself.

Last night I managed to hit a new method. It involved something not unlike those sit-upon two-handled scooters that used to be popular in grade school gym classes. Only this one was designed to lie down on while facing forward, with your face towards the pavement, as if it were some kind of inverse luge. It was angled such that my face was several inches further away from the asphalt than the rest of me. I don't remember if I actually had a suction cup strapped to my right hand or if I was just picturing it working that way, but it moved by me holding onto the scooter with my left hand and reaching out to pull myself forward with my right, and it moved at ridiculous speeds- I was keeping up with someone on a moped, and at one point I started pushing off the ground behind me with one leg as well as pulling forward with one hand and managed to take off at an even faster pace than the moped person. It was fantastic.

I suspect at least part of the dream originated in reading a listicle about recalled toys from American history, one or two of which were finger-pinchin' scooters like the ones from gym classes. I don't care. If that's what my subconscious decides to do with the material, I'm good with it. Because seriously, that was awesome motion.
