Okay, I don't think I'm doing this French polish technique right, but the top of my nightstand is now many, many shades of amber darker than it was when I started. It hasn't got the mirrorlike finish you get with a proper French polish- it's got visibly ripply places where I applied the shellac in circles. Still pretty, just... not what I was aiming for, and I"m not sure how to go about making it look like what I was aiming for.

OTOH, it's my damn nightstand and I can do what I want with it. And I still have the drawer and the rest of the nightstand to practice on, so there's that.

Hrm.

The ripples - that's why they invented 'random orbit' buffers. I just learned this last weekend (I think it was) when we were wandering Lowe's. (I was really hoping Eor was going to buy me a sander when he paused and stared at them for a few minutes, but alas. He still thinks I can hand-sand my cutting board.)
