When I go out kayaking, I make a point of leaving my phone and my wallet home on the grounds that I don't want to lose either one should the boat overturn. True, there are zippered pockets in my life jacket, but I get a little paranoid about losing things in rough conditions. I did make a point of photographing my driver's license with the cheapo camera I got to go paddling, so that if something happened to me and I couldn't talk, a rescuer might stand a chance of finding identification information on the SD card.

Took a somewhat less water-vulnerable step today just to be on the safe side. I ordered one of these- a standard wrist-strap RoadID. It's got my name, year of birth, town of residence, blood group/allergy info, health insurance member ID, and emergency contact phone numbers on it. That should be enough for the ambulance crew or the Coasties in the event of an incapacitating incident, either on the bike or on the water.

I am very fond of RoadID. I think it's a great idea. (Mine currently attaches to the laces of my running shoes, where I am less likely to forget it.)

Sensible place for it. I went for the wristband because I change my shoes before getting into the kayak, and there's nowhere on the water shoes that would work as an attachment point. That, and depending on the weather I wear one of two different pairs of sneakers on the bike.

Ooh, thank you for the link! That seems like a very sensible thing to have on me now that I'm dicing with peak hour traffic on my bike every day.

Yeah, seriously. For a long time I wore cargo shorts for most of my bicycling. They weren't comfortable over long distances, but they could hold my keys and enough ID for the paramedics without a risk of me pulling to a stop at the twenty mile mark and going "Wait, I last saw my wallet ten miles ago". I wanted something a little less likely to be lost than just a loose ID card and significantly less likely to dig into my leg than the wallet.

I only just learned of this over the weekend thanks to Patty's fascination with the Tour de France. Seems like a great idea to me, though I'm personally stuck on which item would be the best fit for me.

No problem. I didn't used to worry about it so much because I had my address, phone number, and blood group written on a sticker that came with my helmet, but there wasn't room to revise the helmet info when I moved- and now that I do kayaking as well as biking, I want to have my identification with me in a non-helmet scenario. So this seemed like a good way to go.
