A while ago I backed a kickstarter to put a memorial to H. P. Lovecraft in the Providence, RI public library. It succeeded, and not only is there going to be a memorial bust put up but there's going to be a nice chunk of cash donated to children's literacy programs in the area as well. If anyone in the area is interested in paying a visit, the unveiling date is set for August 22nd; I'm hoping to go if I can get the time to get there.

Yes, I know the man was an ass of Cyclopean proportions when it came to his racial attitudes, and that I can name all of his female characters ever without running out of fingers to count them on, but American horror literature owes him an awful, awful lot, and I wanted to be part of acknowledging that.

Do people often say this to you?

That's cool. I'm surprised there wasn't one already. When I imagine Providence, I imagine Lovecraft memorabilia and tacky walking tours about him everywhere you look! His importance is probably inflated in my mind. If I'm ever in that part of the world (which is unlikely) I'll check it out.

Thanks, Derien, for pointing this out to me.
