Apr. 10th, 2013 10:55 amIn the past, I've RPed a number of characters in daemonverse AUs- worlds where things are more or less the same as those characters' canons, except that everybody has a daemon a la Northern Lights/His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. I'm kind of fond of picking more unusual species of mammal, and of picking entirely non-mammalian species, just to balance things out- it's really easy to choose some kind of dog or cat or weasel or something and be done with it, but there's an awful lot of animals out there to point up aspects of someone's personality.
I bring this up because in the past I have said that Mordin Solus, from Mass Effect, had a mantis shrimp daemon. Yeah, I know, he's an alien and if nonhumans had daemons they would probably be animals from the nonhumans' native ecosystems, but I didn't really feel like creating a species from scratch, and mantis shrimps were interesting enough to use, plus small enough that he could probably get away with keeping some kind of portable aquarium on his person for it.
Today the Oatmeal did a post about mantis shrimp.
I stand by my choice of daemon for Mordin.

Date: 2013-04-10 03:41 pm (UTC)There should be more arthropod and other invertebrate daemons. There's so many different kinds of them out there that they could cover whole spectra of people.
