Notes From New Vegas 10
Nov. 13th, 2010 04:43 pmNotes From New Vegas 10: I Really Wish I Had A Title I Could Put Here
When last we saw our heroine Janice was headed south to the Mojave outpost of the New California Republic. And she was doing it on the road, too, because wandering off to the side of the road got her scorpions. Tempting as Ruby Nash's casserole sounded (which is to say, not at all), she didn't really feel like gathering radscorpion venom glands, so she stuck to the road. For some reason it led up a rather steep hill to this absolutely colossal pair of statues, one of which was a guy in a trenchcoat, a helmet, and a gas mask, the other of which was a guy in a duster and cowboy hat, shaking hands. A plaque nearby indicated that it was a monument to the merger of the Nevada desert rangers and the NCR rangers in 2271 in exchange for the NCR's protection of Hoover Dam, New Vegas, and the southern Nevada area against Caesar's Legion. Well, okay then, that was kinda cool.
There were a bunch of people in NCR uniforms around (one of whom freaked out and did the OH GOD WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE thing when Janice mentioned the Legion massacre of Nipton, thereby fulfilling her obligation to Mr. Scary Dog Hat Man), and a bunch of caravan people all stacked up and making grouchy noises about not being able to go anywhere. Not really Janice's business, she just wanted to get Primm dealt with. She headed for the main building and talked the major on duty into sending extra troops to take care of Primm since it was much better for business than just having the place open and vulnerable- hooray, Barter skill check!- and then, because the caravaners out there had really sounded grouchy, asked if anything could be done to help. Besides, she needed the money- a lot of her stuff was starting to get into bad shape owing to being repeatedly shot. The major directed her to Kris Kristofferson and no I am not kidding. The boss-man of the whole outpost is Ranger Jackson, who's voiced by, and actually rather resembles, Kris Kristofferson. Ranger Kristofferson asked her if she would be interested in clearing out the roads near Ivanpah since there were 'critters' around, and indicated he could 'lose' some supplies where she might find them as apparently he wasn't authorized to hire a mercenary directly.
Well, Janice was a little grumpy at being called a merc, but the more she thought about it the less grumpy she got. It wasn't as if she was planning on couriering much any more, and a merc who wasn't actively merc'ing was probably less likely to get shot at on the grounds that they probably had a reputation for being prone to shooting back. So, okay, off to check out the critters. Fortunately they were just giant ants, and it wasn't as if she didn't have experience with those, so a couple of dead ants later Ranger Kristofferson happened to lose track of a couple of guns and some repair kits and ammo and food, oopsie daisy. He didn't have any other work to offer, but said she could relax in the barracks if she wanted. Turned out that was the major trading post part of the facility, so she stocked up on supplies, ignored the recruitable companion there because I totally didn't realize that Rose of Sharon Cassidy was someone you could recruit, and decided to go see what else could be found in the vicinity.
Wasn't much. The southwest gate was locked and Required A Key, which probably means that at some point it'll be the access door to downloadable content. The caravaners just sold the usual stuff. There was a weird-looking ranger up on one of the rooftops, name of Ghost, but it turned out when you talked to her that she just wanted to pay you to go find out what had happened to Nipton. Janice told her about Mr. Scary Dog Hat Man, and the ranger made grouchy noises about it. She didn't like the people in Nipton but she didn't think they deserved the Legion to happen to them. She then gave Janice a bunch of caps and sent her on her way.
So... yeah. Janice found herself in a situation where she could either wander around in the desert killing things and running screaming from other things, or head back up to Novac to find out where the people who had tried to shoot her in the head had gone. Given that she'd just dealt with giant ants, the desert wasn't really seeming all that appealing an option. She had some good caps, too, and the guy in Novac who ran the shop seemed pretty well supplied- not to mention that Novac basically existed as a rest stop for caravans heading north, and with the bugs near Ivanpah cleared out the caravans would start flowing again. So, Novac it was. And by the ROADS. Not by the DEATHCLAW INFESTED MOUNTAINS. Trust me, one deathclaw constitutes an infestation all by itself.
Anyway, she made it back to Novac, and it turned out when she talked to Manny the daytime sniper that Evil Chandler Bing and his Khan buddies were headed to the Vegas strip. Which made sense, since it's not as if anyone could get away with a suit like Benny's anywhere else. Janice figured that made her life pretty simple. Avoid the Strip and she'd never see Evil Chandler Bing or his stupid platinum chip ever again. Granted, she'd have to find something to do for a living now that couriering was no longer an option, but she could handle that. Maybe she'd... no, that would get her shot at. Maybe she could... no, that involved giant evil bugs. Okay, maybe... um... hey, what was that thing sticking out of the horizon a few miles up the road? HELIOS One, you say? A solar power plant from before the War, you say? In the hands of the NCR, who currently kind of approved of Janice because she'd helped out their Rangers, you say?
Well, shoot. Janice wasn't a particularly sciencey person but a power plant sounded like the kind of place where you could just work for a living for a while and not get shot. So, yeah. That would be where she'd go next. Hooray for HELIOS One! Hooray for the NCR!
