Over the years I've seen a lot of collectible crap out there, because I am an inveterate pack rat who likes dinky little souvenirs. Usually for me this takes the form of plastic models of scenery or something similar. Once in a while it's a particularly sparkly tchotchke. And every so often it's something that just plain pacifies the urge in my head to add a particular decorative element to my desk. As a result, I look at a lot of gift shops and stands in the various malls and shopping areas I visit, and I see an amazing quantity of crap.
Well, I have a question about crap.
I've seen a lot of stands selling Chinese stuff or Asian-in-general stuff in my day, both in New York City and in the malls up and down the Eastern Seaboard. Only bought from 'em once or twice - a redstone horse carving, a set of hand exerciser balls - but I've seen 'em way more often. And every now and again I spot them.
The Chibi Shaolin Babies.
I swear, I don't know how else to describe the bloody things! They're figurines of big-headed kids dressed as monks or something, doing kung fu or other monkly activities (but usually kung fu), and they're scary-looking little buggers. and nine tenths of the time, they're wearing teeny tiny sunglasses! They're freaky looking and every time I get within ten feet of them I lose all nerve to ask the shopkeeper what they're about, because in my book asking a question about an item is tantamount to saying 'I want to buy this item', and I DON'T. They're FREAKY. I just want an identification - what the heck are they? Do they represent something? Are they significant somehow? or are they just the Chinese equivalent of Pwethiouth Momenth figurines of big-eyed kids in firefighter uniforms or porcelain workups of angels or something - just popular crap depicting kids doing stuff that people see as heroic?
If you can't tell what I'm talking about by the description, then steel your stomach, because I have links to examples of the things. Please don't say I didn't warn you.
