Well, I'm awake.

I'm also in the office much earlier than usual; the big boss is looking to have breakfast or lunch meetings with each of the company staff just to make sure everybody's on the same page about the company, and wouldn't you know it, I drew the breakfast straw. Turns out he's not in the office yet. Meh. I'll use the time to catch up on early morning maintenance.

This weekend is going to be one of throwing things away, packing things up, and dismantling other things. I think my old desk is going to have to go. It's huge, and I don't relish getting it down the stairs of my current building- but getting it up the stairs of the next one is even less to be relished. I'm debating whether to bother listing it on Craigslist or just getting rid of the damn thing. The couch is going to [livejournal.com profile] daniidebrabant and I'm getting something from IKEA instead, or else buying the couch that's already present. My dining room table comes with me, though. It's a standard two-people-per-long-side table, not too big. Coffee table as well, probably, I can use that to hold up the telly. And probably the bed, but that's easy enough to disassemble. The bookshelves are being disassembled too. Huzzah for IKEA furniture, it all pegs together.

In other news, I had something of a surprise re: one of my RP characters the other day- [livejournal.com profile] remindmeof_me, Corporal Adrian Shephard. He's from one of the Half-Life expansion packs for the first game, but produced by a contracted company rather than Valve. There's not that much characterization for him in-game, just some journal entries of his in the instruction manual. It's pretty stilted writing, like someone who had a good education but doesn't like writing much or has to edit his work a lot. I wound up saying he was from rural West Virginia, that he hunted as a kid both for fun and to put meat in his family's freezer, and that after high school he signed on with the Marines for a career with an honorable service that'd let him see the world. This was mostly based on a couple of visits I've made to Rowlesburg, WV, and on some of the things the people there've said. And to a lesser degree on things I've heard from Chuck Yeager, who was one of my heroes in grade school and high school, especially the parts about how ninety percent of the kills made by American pilots during the First World War (or maybe the Second, or maybe both) were made by eleven per cent of the total pilots, and it turned out pretty much every single one of those pilots had grown up in rural country with a rifle in his hands. Given Shephard's demonstrated abilities in Half-Life: Opposing Force, it seemed like a reasonable explanation.

And then I found out about Carlos Hathcock, whose life story is basically the same thing, just a little geographically displaced. And with Vietnam instead of HOLY *!&)& ALIENS. Even the part where Mr. Hathcock's hunting was a major source of meat for his family.

I... am not sure what to think about that. Is it stereotyping if it turns out to correlate to somebody specific in the real world?

ETA: Breakfast meeting over. All is well.
