Well, after the configuration work on the switches this weekend, and after plugging in a cable- I'd miscounted which blade NICs had to be connected and completely left the last one unused- all our blades are now happily up and running and usable at speeds that make 'em pretty much indistinguishable from local servers. We'll be working on drawing up a plan to get our other servers moved to Secaucus soon, I don't doubt. For now I'm just going to quietly snicker about the fact that you can tell exactly when I started being the one to name the servers, because our originals had names like FORDLONG and DEV1 and PROD1... and now there's SPOCK and ROMANA and TELETRAAN-1 through TELETRAAN-10. Among others.

No, the names do not particularly reflect the function of the systems in question. On the other hand, they make them recognizable and distinguishable, and I like to think maybe just a little less intimidating, too.

I'm thinkin' if I use that name, it's gonna be for a firewall. For either possible value of the name- the one with the guns, or the one with the video game store and "Door's to your left."

I actually became somewhat disillusioned with the Acts of Gord website some time ago, but I can't recall why at the moment.

Probably because it's been years since he updated. Not that a man's not entitled to finish a project, but I don't generally go back if somewhere's not updating.

I believe it was also mentioned on a forum I used to frequent that a great many of his stories are exaggerations, fabrications, or in some way self-contradictory, and that he is not a pleasant individual to associate with in person. Which shouldn't technically detract from the enjoyment value of the website as reading material, especially since I have no way to verify it, but it does anyway.

Oh, I'm sure they are, and I'm sure he's a jerk if he actually acts like that in person regularly. I was more than happy to read his whole web site anyway, on the grounds that sometimes I really just want to indulge my least commendable urges without actually hurting anyone.

I like your naming convention. :P Ours are Serenity, Heart of Gold (for the Probability ship in HHG, not the FF ep), Defiant (which is replacing our old webserver which was Stargazer) and Tully.
