Those of you who might be going to Millicon, and who are NOT going to buy the Potter book the night it comes out, and are interested in Putting Pointy Sticks Into Defenseless Objects, or seeing same done for purposes of RP reference:

There is an archery shop and indoor shooting range called Archery Custom Shop at 7240 West Madison Street, Forest Park, IL. This is about a twenty-minute drive from the Millicon hotel under good circumstances. The range is open on Friday from noon to nine PM. For $12/hour/person, they will rent a recurve bow, five arrows, a target, a finger guard and an arm guard to people who are interested in shooting.

I have a Zipcar membership, which means that I can reserve a rental car for several hours that afternoon from any number of places within a half-mile's distance of the hotel, then drive people who might be interested in arrowage over to the range.

Would anyone like to spend some time shooting and/or watching other people shoot, as an alternative to "OH MY GOD, IT WAS HAGRID WHO WAS MADE OF CHOCOLATE ALL ALONG!"?

ETA: I have since discovered that the archery shop closes about an hour before the initial line-up at Borders is expected to begin. Nevertheless, the offer stands. Just be aware that the place closes at 9 PM.

Coolness. As I noted in my above edit, it turns out that the range closes an hour before the book lineup is supposed to begin- but still! Arrows! Shooty things! RPG-type shooty things!

Shooty things are cool. I haven't had the chance to do any archery since Guide camp when I was... oh, not more than fifteen.

Well, I went and looked at con schedule, and the book lineup is scheduled to start an hour after the range closes- but still.

Oooh. I've never done archery before. Lemme see how the next week goes before I confirm. I might be able to rent another car for a few hours.

The range closes at nine, the book thing starts at ten- but at least there will be arrowage, if we're lucky. I think if we get enough interested people I'll call the range and warn them first, as a courtesy.

Um...well, not exactly. But I am old enough to rent one, and have a discount program with many of the larger car rental places through work.

Those kind of count, yes?

Oh, okay. If you can rent a car through a regular rental place that's cool too. I'm going with Zipcar because I already pay them for the service and because they carry the insurance- if I went to a regular rental agency, i could get a car for the whole con, but I"d have to buy liability insurance separately as I haven't got my own any more. Zipcar's simpler for me.

I don't see why not, since as far as I can tell there's no reservation system at the range. It's a matter of finding a car that'll fit the appropriate number of people, that's all- I'll just shoot for the most seating I can find.

Ooooh. I've only done it at random theme parks on holiday, but I love archery. The only thing I'd be sad to miss would be thread-reenacting, but since we have LARP for that too...
