Yeah, well... it's gonna be interesting getting out of the building from here on out. We've managed to block the stairwell at ground level and we did get the fire escapes pulled up. Soon as I get the word from daniidebrabant I've got to see if eleven miles an hour is enough of a speed to make it from here to the harbor and nick a boat. Ellis Island isn't gonna be easy to get to by land on account of the !*&)!(*&)! medical center between here and Liberty State Park and the implied numbers of fresh dead.

If I'm lucky they'll have migrated in the direction of the highway or the train tracks.

The zombies might be able to walk across the ocean/harbor floor if they don't have to breathe. But an island might be easy to protect. Maybe. But you might also have to fight with other people to get safty and a place to stay on the island.

Even if they can walk across the floor, they'll be moving more slowly than if they were on land. THese're the slow trudgy kind, not the 28 Days Later kind. Ellis Island has the causeway so it might be problematic. Liberty Island has to be reached by ferry, so it might be safer- less useful, but safer. Barring that the only thing I can think of is to find what looks like a reasonably safe course (I so don't know this stupid river) and make for Staten Island. That has four land-based access points- the Verazzano-Narrows Bridge, the Outerbridge Crossing, the Goethals Bridge, and the Bayonne Bridge- but it's a fair sized island with fewer people than Manhattan and a better chance of getting agriculture under way in earnest if need be, since it's the least heavily citified of the five boroughs. Besides, I have relatives there.

True. Sticking with ones away from land, that you have to get to by ferry- those are probably the best bets. I'm not familiar with some the places you meantioned, just know the names, so it depends on what you think is your best chance.

Ellis Island is close to Liberty Island; they're both within paddling distance of Liberty State Park if you have a kayak. Ellis Island has a causeway that's one car wide for parks department employees to get over to the island. Everyone who wants to tour the facilities that used to be the point of entry for most immigrants to the United States has to arrive by ferry. Liberty Island is where the STatue of Liberty is, and it just has ferries.

Staten Island is the fifth borough of New York City, after Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn. It's geographically a lot closer to New Jersey than New York; the only land connection it has to New YOrk is the Verazzano-Narrows Bridge, which was the longest suspension bridge on Earth when it was built. Damn thing's over a mile long (I should know, I've biked it twice). The other three bridges connect the island to points in New Jersey. The Staten Island Ferry runs between Manhattan and STaten Island regularly, so I know there's a good broad channel and a safe harbor on that side of the island.

Liberty Island might be safer, but dunno how good for longterm. Also, the Statue of Libery would be.... well, much higher ground. If Ellis Island is good for agriculture, head to either of 'em. (Or at least that's what I'd do.)

Staten Island has four ways for zombies to get on it? Erk. But if it's the best for agriculture, and you've got relatives there, and you can get there easily... might be best bet. But I don't know.

It's also huge by comparison. If its economy were better, it could be its own city. Ellis Island was never meant as more than a processing center for immigrants.

Yeah. I highly doubt they were preparing for zombies when they built things on it, too. But as I said, I don't know much about 'em, other than what you said.

As a safety note, you might look into navigation across the rooftops. I don't know about Jersey City, but the firedoors around here are heavy. A zombie may not be able to knock one open unless it knows you're there. Hence, limited zombie rooftop action. Staying off the streets might be helpful, at least to navigate around your block. Admittedly, this is not the best time to practice le parkour running, but necessity and invention go hand in hand.

Most of this block is brownstones. There are two gaps in navigability: the opening on Barrow Street to let people into the green space between the backs of houses, and the church property next door. One of the guys on the other side of me has a rooftop garden, so I know those brownstones have solid roofs... we'll see what has to be done from here.
